IRS website now requires a face scan

I needed a copy of a file that the IRS sent and discovered the IRS now uses ID.me to access the site. So now anyone wanting to access their records - including details about child tax credits, payment plans, or tax transcripts - on the IRS website will be required to record a video of their face with their computer or smartphone and send it to the private contractor ID to confirm their identity.

I tried for an hour and gave up after being informed repeatedly that I wasn't me. It wasn't until the next day that it dawned on me that this private company now had a copy of my driver's license, username, password to use as they want as there is no law regulating how the data can be used or shared. Starting this summer everyone will be required to register with ID.me to access their records.

Ten federal agencies said they are planning to expand their facial recognition capabilities in the next year.

I'm not the only one with concerns as outlined in the article I've linked to.

Will this solve the problem of people filing fake returns under a stolen SS number?

I don't see how since logging into the IRS website is not required to file.

They sound like a big fat target for a data breach.

Found this interesting recent article about them on Krebs on Security.

You now have a wait time of 6 hours, 35 minutes to start the conference call to log in to your ID.ME account...

Guess I'll be printing and mailing my returns from now on. George Orwell was spot on, just a few decades off.

Seems like I crossed tracks with ID.me at one point over the past couple of years. It was either when I got my Real ID at the Calif. DMV, or when I updated my TSA with with PreCheck. I need to go check that out and do some homework.

I have the same concerns at GGD regarding data breaches.

The only reason I accessed the IRS site was to use the Where's My Check function.

I've no interest in submitting my visage to the IRS in the first place, and reading the article in The Atlantic, have less than zero interest.

So it's likely that feature won't be available to me.

I did use ID.me to get my military discount from Apple, but that didn't require any video.

But if the IRS makes a mistake, or changes the amount of a refund, or makes some demand for whatever reason, one will be forced to submit that selfie.

Since ID.me uses one-to-many facial identification, how much of this requirement is based on preventing fraud, and how much is motivated to find people.

It's all a little too Orwellian for this boomer.
