... but that being said, the culling of these animals really makes no sense ... firstly because the hamsters in general can survive the infection and actually seem to be respond to it better than do human beings, secondly because although it's possible for the hamsters to transmit to humans, I would think the chance of that happening is vanishingly small, IF the human in question is taking reasonable, common-sense precautions. (Also, unlike the minks, many species of hamster are fiercely territorial and cannot be housed together, which would also tend to reduce the chances of widespread transmission... of course, if you are farming or breeding the animals in bulk, then all bets are off, just as they were for the mink farms...)
