Heading to San Diego for a Week. Stuff to do with a teen?

The usual museums and stuff have been scheduled. Going to try and rent a wetsuit so he can try snorkeling or perhaps surfing. Suggestions welcome.

For snorkeling, I recommend starting at La Jolla Shores and heading South towards the Seven Caves (but don't actually enter them, unless conditions are calm - if you're in there when a wave comes in, it'll be like being inside a jagged washing machine) - try to go at low tide to increase the chances of seeing aquatic denizens.

Getting a kayak from one of the nearby rental shops would make the trek a bit easier - or you can walk along the base of the cliffs towards the caves.

Unfortunately, you're probably a bit late to see the Leopard Sharks - but maybe there'll be some stragglers.

Enjoy the water and storefronts at Ocean Beach for a day - wetsuit not necessarily required. Wrap up at sunset with appetizers and beverages at the Wonderland Ocean Pub.

Did you already block out some time for hiking around Torrey Pines?
If not - do so - by far one of the more scenic places to see; here's the Reserve's website, and pdfs of trail maps, guides are available on the first link above (under the "Brochures" tab on the web page).

I used to enjoy hanging out with and watching the hang gliders from the cliffs above Blacks Beach. I have no idea if this area is still open to the public... a beautiful place to picnic.

If you’re in La Jolla, check out the cave store! It’s got an incredible staircase through the cliffs down to a waterfront cave. It feels like a smuggler‘s tunnel from the hardy boys.

Does he like guitars? The Taylor Guitar factory tour runs daily at 1:00. Takes about an hour.

By reputation only... but, there's a pin in a Google map in case I ever make it down there.

Depending on how adventurous you both are, there are plenty of skydiving options in the SD area. Skydiving so close to the ocean is pretty damn cool.

It is what it is.

We took our boys to the usual “tourist traps”: Old Town San Diego. San Diego Zoo/San Diego Wild Animal park. Sea World/ , Belmont Park. Wife and I went kayaking in mission bay. Just drove there on Saturday, picked up son in Oceanside and we went to the La Jolla tide pools.

We went to both the zoo, and the safari park. The safari park is MASSIVE!!!!!!!!!!

Tip, you can buy the tickets in advance on-line, and they are cheaper. We did it the night before from our hotel room, and showed the e-mail at the gate.

Is there the option of doing watersports, like jet ski tours or parasailing? We did that in Key West and my18 y.o. daughter loved it!

I learned to water ski at Mission Bay in the late 1950's.... easy-peasy, but my older sister was having all kinds of trouble trying to get the hang of it, so she got more boat time. I was sure jealous back then, as my kid mind thought we should get equal time, even though I got a couple of nice long runs out of the deal. Not real good water sports weather right now...., probably a few months away.

When we to TJ that trip, our dad gave us $5 each, and told us haggle for whatever we wanted. Sis got a bunch of small trinkets, and things to eat, and I got some mounted bull horns that hung over the inside of my front doors wherever I moved over the years, lastly circa 1976. Spousal unit was never fond of 'em, so sometime during the aughts she "accidentally" dropped them when taking them down for cleaning. Gotta go to TJ if ya get a chance, though since 9/11 it's lost a lot of its former attraction.
