EMI and/or RFI could certainly cause problems, as well as metal objects between the mini and an object of its emission.
But I think in mainly starts with a weak BT signal that is more subject to interference and sensitive to antenna location than would be a stronger signal.
I wonder about the example in the picture and how BT connectivity would fair if the mini were placed in similar juxtaposition but on the right side of the mini, in a more conservative position, without any kind of a stand.
Or a compromise, or moderate position, in the center of the table behind the keyboard.
I was having trouble with a Magic Trackpad where the cursor would frequently respond wildly, sometimes not moving at all, then moving in rapid jerky movements.
Sometimes changing the batteries helped for a bit (I didn't try AA alkalines) but when the battery percentage dropped to around 80-75%, frustration would ensue.
Typically, I sit in a chair about 6' away from the mini and monitor, with them positioned slightly to my left.
I found that turning the TrackPad so that it faces the them more squarely allows for trouble free operation down to 5% of the TrackPads battery.
One day I might change the mini's location slightly, and I expect connectivity would improve with less consideration given to my positioning of the TrackPad.
