Today was the last day of...

work for me. I just retired and am now a man of leisure. It hasn't really hit me yet. I've been working pretty much full time for 45 years. This is going to be a massive transition. However, I already have a massive list of things I need to do plus new adventures I want to do.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Give yourself a little time to decompress. You can do what you want now!

Congratulations! Sounds like you’ve earned your time to kick back and enjoy yourself. They say it takes about 2 years for you to totally adjust to your new life. I’m retired 4 yrs now and it took about that span of time for me.

Having taken that step just about four months ago, the best way I can describe retirement so far is: Every Day is Saturday; so enjoy the perpetual long weekend!

Congrats. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Two 1/2 years later and I still get up very early in the morning. That habit will likely never end, I suppose.

Still adjusting here... Just don't listen to everyone telling to relax and kick back. Find something, volunteer, whatever.

Thanks for the good wishes, folks. You don't have to worry about me dying because I've suddenly become inactive. I'm already planning a trip to Mexico next month to go sailing along the Pacific coast for a couple of months. I have a whole bunch of stuff planned after that too. I plan to be way busier in retirement than I was working.

Congratulations! Spanish for retired is jubilado, as in jubilee.

Every day is a Saturday!

About seven years ago for me. I can't believe how quickly the time has passed. One thing I learned about my retirement is how little I get done some days, and it doesn't hurt a bit.

Staying (relatively) busy is the trick. Any chance you'll be called back in a "consultation" role? You can make extra money and only work now and then to keep you busy...

Congrats Davester! You've reached a real milestone in life and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And I hope you'll be here with us for a long, long time, giving us your cheer, and your sage advice and wisdom.

Retirement is a little bit like being a kid again, with each day being a summer day, "no school", and all day to do your chores. With the latter being optional!

I've been there for some twenty years now and I LOVE IT! You will too!

I've seen this quite often at my workplace. A good friend of mine and I worked at the same auto factory as our fathers. His Pop retired and was found dead in his bed a month after retirement. My Pop retired and was alive for another 34 years after he retired. You just never know.

Yep. In fact my boss yesterday emphasized that they would be happy to have me come back for exactly that. I also have offers from some of the consultants we hire.
