No, but the only reason this made the news was because there was video. Smash and grab has always been a thing. So if by ‘timely’ you mean there is more of it happening? I don’t have any stats.

My wife has become terrified of being carjacked. I told her that there has only been one carjacking in our city so it is very rare although it does seem to be a thing that is happening more and more. I also told her that her car’s doors lock automatically when in drive so all she needs to do is drive away.

A much bigger problem than hijacking is people leaving their cars running during the winter where we live when they go into a convenience store. Or people who gas up and go inside the convenience store but leave their keys in their vehicle’s ignition. Then I reminded her that our cars are keyless. Could they grab her purse and take the car? Certainly. We also insure our vehicles for theft.

While I feel your sentiment, posting a year old video like that as a warning without referencing the date, feels odd, as though this were new or an escalation.

Unlike the organized smash and grabs of somewhat recent history, I haven't seen much of a mention of a rash of commuter/tourist stuck in traffic burglaries/robberies.
