A young man tracking/publishing air flights of Elon etc

A young man named Sweeney is publishing Elon’s air flights and is going to expand to every fame exec you can think of. Very dangerous in these times IMO. WHEN something bad happens he is going to get his behind sued.

He’s scraping together difficult to get and compile, but publicly available information. So he shouldn’t be at risk for being sued I would think. But yeah, it is dangerous for high profile figures such as Musk.

I recall when I was instructed to hide the fact that my corporation owned a partial interest in an executive jet. So I put the tail number as the asset serial number.

And it was funny because EVERYONE knew about it in the company. They bought the jet for the CEO. When he 'left to pursue other interests' and sailed away with his platinum handshake, the new CEO sold the share of the jet. Rather publicly and loudly. Especially since we made a profit on the deal.

I am kind of surprised there isn't already an app for this.

And there isn't anything bad that could happen that couldn't happen already this kid just makes it a little easier to track Elon Musk (or whoever else he starts compiling the data for.... assuming they all use the same specific private jet and not vehicles from a fleet.)

Once a person surpasses $999,999,999 and 99 cents, they become eligible to be stalked? :-)

So he shouldn’t be at risk for being sued I would think.

Anybody is always at risk for being sued, if a potential plaintiff has deep enough pockets, deeper than a potential defendant.

It doesn't really matter if there's little chance of winning, if a potential plaintiff can make it seem like there might be a case.

It likely depends on how this guy will do what he's going to do with his data.

Should he tick off a deep pockets celebrity, he could be in for a pricey ride.

If someone put up a Twitter account stocking your flight paths (among others) and asked you for five bucks to take it down, what would you do?

He told Musk he would take it down for a Tesla S loaded.

He was offered 3 years use of a Tesla. He turned it down because returning would be a hassle.

He did not make the initial offer.

Was just doing his thing. A hobby. Assembling public domain info and posting it.

And then a rich man tried to shut him down with an arrogant patronizing lowball offer and he countered.

That's not extortion. That's capitalism.

To answer my own question. If Musk were only a millionaire, a Tesla S loaded would cost him the equivalent of 39¢.

The car offer -- to be clear, was a 3-year lease -- and was from someone else and not Musk. It was a BS publicity-thing. The kid was right to turn it down.

When he turned down $5K from Musk, the kid -- who apparently has spent upwards of 1000 hours sourcing data and putting together the code to assemble and visualize the data -- asked for an internship. Not even a paid-internship. And Musk refused. So, the kid asked for a contribution to his college-fund. And Musk blocked him on Twitter.

...And after accusations that he was unlawfully pulling the data, Sweeney filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the FAA and now has his info delivered directly from the government.

I find this whole thing quite inspirational.

This would be a lot more interesting if instead of Musk, it was Mark Zuckerberg that was being tracked, and hearing his reaction to it.

Don’t cotton to this, bub.
  • Let’s cut the hairsplitting. It’s a form of stalking. No bueno.
  • It’s legit dangerous. The only people it ‘empowers’ is looneys. Got a grudge about that microchip in your elbow from that Dr. Pepper Facebook commanded you to buy from Amazon? Got a gun? Here’s Beelzebub’s itinerary. Fix his wagon.
  • Okay. So what? Eat the 1% rich, right? Heck yeah! And the admin staff and bystanders and anybody near my blaze of glory, especially that b***h that broke my heart on Twitter, that flounces around with Musk carrying his Dayrunner! At least, I’m pretty sure it’s Musk. Whatever. They’re all hooors.

Okay, maybe a little over the top. But, c’mon, this clearly breaks The Rule: “Don’t be a Richard”.

And WHOOSH goes the point that he shouldn't have to fsking DO anything to not be stalked!

How about this; I'll follow YOU around with an app, and since you can afford $500, I'll keep publishing YOUR whereabouts on twitter until you pay me... Why not? YOU can afford it... You can just make this whole thing go away by just paying me.
Oh, I see, you're just a greedy fsck that doesn't want to pay... well, then screw you, you greedy rich bastige...

See why it's better to make the rules apply to everyone equally, rather than just saying "screw it, he's rich, he can afford to pay up".

And yes, I'm aware the information was "public"... I don't think it should be. I don't think private jet flight information belongs outside the air traffic control "community".

Everything you're saying is true, in a perfect world. The thing is, the information is available, what the kid is doing is legal, and if Musk doesn't like it, he can easily remedy it today (with an unpaid internship). If he, or you, think it's unfair, then y'all should act to have the laws changed.

There is no such thing as a "right to privacy" that is similar to the protections in the Bill of Rights.

The only privacy protections we have are those that are explicitly spelled out by law.

The problem with tech is that it changes so quickly it's almost impossible to react in a timely way. By the time you pass a law to deal with some new situation, the law is obsolete because tech has moved on.

People are cheering this because the tech giants are getting a taste of their own medicine.

Schadenfreude...

A couple of other things to make note of:

1. He's not tracking Musk. He's tracking Musk's private plane. He knows what city Musk landed in, not where Musk is staying the night. If Musk flies into Newark Airport, is he staying in NJ or NY? Dunno from this info. And Musk could solve the problem (and save many thousands of tons of nasty pollution) by flying commercial or using a private plane-sharing service.

2. Musk tracks just about every Tesla and identifies the driver by the keytag and phone apps wherever they go down to a few feet 24 hours a day, every day of the week.

The first part of number one still supplies significant information to someone with I’ll intent.

The second part of number one is irrelevant to the aspect being discussed. It’s not a conversation of two (unconnected) wrongs making a right.

Number two is close to apples and oranges. He doesn’t collect the information as a matter of taking passive aggressive action against someone, and the information is obviously not gathered for public dissemination.

It applies in respect of the character of the two individuals.

Tesla collect GBs of data from every car. A whole lot more than the telemetry gathered by other modern vehicle companies.

Tesla opted out from the Automotive Privacy Alliance agreement on automotive privacy principles.

And Tesla doesn't promise to anonymize the info they collect. They just don't tie a VIN to the video clips that they make public/searchable. If you've enabled any of the "self driving" options, they collect even more.

Even if they did make some token effort to anonymize data, just how anonymous do you think a multi-camera-feed with GPS is going to be when you park in your garage?

This kid republishes public info on airplanes. He doesn't use graymarketing methods to trick people into sharing every move they make in their daily life.

Between the two, one's a villain and the other's just some kid.
