I keep hearing this phrase thrown about with respect to the NGAD (Next Generation Air Dominance) program, and the B-21 bomber, of which number 6 is now being built. They supposedly just tested the fuel systems for the B-21 digitally. What does this mean? All I know is that it's supposed to be "faster" than what "analog engineering"? Is this really a new thing, or is it just some kind of corporate gobbledygook?

Just guessing here, but I suspect it means all aspects of the plane are simulated in a digital world (3D model with complete real world physics).

but you can't simulate what you don't know you don't know. Lots of one-off examples that they had no clue about until something flew, and then didn't.

No you can’t, and that’s why they’ll ultimately test it. But simulations allow you to evaluate more iterations and get much closer to the answer.

Before I retired in September, "Digital Twin" was all the rage for my employer (they own lots of big gray ships) - mainly for new systems under development, but also for some of the existing systems. The idea was that if you have "Digital Twins" of multiple systems, you can put them through all sorts of scenarios and see how they'd operate together, without having to actually build them (thus saving $$, not just for the construction, but also the testing itself). This was primarily for software-intensive systems.

For the curious, here's an older blurb on one such effort, "AEGIS Virtual Twin".
"Ultimately, this ability to test a less mature build for free essentially would allow the developers to work out any kinks experienced at sea before actually paying for the build’s own operational test and evaluation event."

Digital Engineering Process sure sounds like powerpoint engineering to me

Fluid Dynamics simulation on the iPhone... it could happen. I do not think the Mac will be taken seriously for engineering until there is a Digital Engineering Process suite that runs on macOS/Apple silicon. Maybe Apple will buy an aerospace company like Lockheed Martin Corp. to make it happen, only $110 billion...
