What format for new drive in old iMac?

The hard drive in my 2013 iMac died and I'm installing a replacement (optical drive).

I plan to restore from a time machine backup.

Do I need to format the drive with disk utility prior to doing the time machine restore and if so, what format should I use?

The new drive is a SSD I hope.

If so, yes, AFPS.

Are you currently booting from a different drive?

Usually I’d either download a Mojave installer:

[support.apple.com]


Or install using recovery mode:

[support.apple.com]


You’ll be prompted to format the new drive either way.

After OS installation completes, you’ll be given the option to migrate from a Time Machine backup.
