Got me a little project. Need to get a flat board about 5/16" thick and just under 4.5" x 8" and then I router or jigsaw out a large hole in the middle. Oh, and then I'll need to flat-countersink mounting holes.

My first idea is to buy small, cheap bamboo kitchen cutting boards and cut to size etc. They're usually thin like I'd need. My 2nd idea is maybe 1/4" MDF if that's available.

So I'm asking for dense, not plywood.

Stacked masonite? That might work. Might not need to drill counter-sink mounting holes, just different size holes in some.

The overall theme here is that flatness and straight is also valued.

I also have a bunch of leftover, 1/8" panelling from my basement project. That would actually look pretty kick-ass here. I could glue and stack, and maybe it wouldn't shatter and splinter apart when shaping and drilling and cutting? Dunno.

Put a piece of masking tape over where you are drilling the holes, then drill through that, to prevent splitting and splintering, if you use the paneling.

glue laminated paneling would be very stout. You are making your own plywood!

Are you sure that you want to rule out higher grade, possibly hardwood plywood?

Often you can find smaller craft size pieces at Home Depot/Lowes type places and they can be found at Amazon.

3/8 is pretty much your required thickness IRL.

Two pieces. These would be tweeter mounting plates that attach to a speaker baffle. I’ll try to provide a picture tomorrow. The speakers’ originals are plastic and wrongly sized for the new tweeters. Don’t want to modify the originals. None of this is priceless but it’s all irreplaceable.

Marine grade plywood was conceived, designed, and manufactured for EXACTLY what you need.
It's not the cheap, splintery, full of voids crap that you get at the hardware store.
Go to a decent lumber yard and see if they have some off-cuts in marine grade plywood.

Other than that, the laminated bamboo cutting board sounds really good. Hard, and dense, and will even take a finish.
