Olympic Women’s Figure Skating results (spoilers)

Russian star Kamila Valieva burst into tears Thursday as she missed out on a medal in the women's figure skating after a performance filled with mistakes and haunted by the doping saga that has come to dominate the Winter Olympics.

The 15-year-old prodigy and gold medal favorite made several errors in her routine, momentarily hitting the ice twice as she missed out on the podium.

Valieva placed fourth in the competition, which has been engulfed in the scandal surrounding her positive drug test before the Games.

The results means that a medal ceremony will take place, as she did not place in the top three. Russia's 2021 world champion Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova won gold and silver. Kaori Sakamoto of Japan captured bronze.

I'm reminded of Tonya Harding loosing her composure at the Olympics in the middle of controversy.

So the 15yo has three heart medications, she still medals, in spite of meddling.

Whether or not she should have been at the Olympics (article still to be read) she should have been DQed and not awarded a medal.

Did not medal - Excellent
Should be banned from all international competition? Yes absolutely, no matter her age. Enough evidence that she knew what she was doing. And the COVID reason for the delay in reporting her positive test results - BS. Just the historical cheating Russians fabricating a reason that was followed closely by the news that she passed 2 drug tests recently.

There is so much evidence that the Russians cheat so much that they should all be banned from participating in international events for at least 12 more years. And absolutely no participants representing the Russian Olympic Committee.

Thank you, I'm behind the curve.

I'm a 'clean up your act and try again' kind of guy but yes, this is SOP for Russian teams.

Not every team member may be onboard with cheating, but geeze!

The LA editorial board may have one opinion, but an actual lawyer who participated in the creation of World Anti-Doping Agency and was on the opposite side in some previous cases argues that she should have been allowed to skate. His arguments are based on actual rules and laws and not on knee-jerk political reactions. Ultimately, one could argue that this was the smoothest way out of the conundrum (the fact that she did not place).

Agree. The whole thing is murky and doesn't appear to be a type of "cheating" that helped her performance in any way.

And in the end it didn't matter.

"No one’s goal should be premature, career-ending penalties for children. It’s also wrong to turn Valieva into a punching bag for legitimate concerns about Russian state-sponsored doping and the Olympic movement’s flawed anti-doping effort."

Right on sister!

Yeah, but dopers will have no problem hiding behind that sentiment. If their doped protege can't compete because they can't hide behind the "Just a kid" excuse, we protect future athletes from this abuse. Sucks for Valieva, though.

Just watched the women's free skate competition. Historic performances. Brilliant.

But that was actually horrible for the Russians even though they took gold and silver.

Kamila made so many and such uncharacteristic mistakes, she'll never escape suspicion that she threw her perfomance to ensure her teammates a medal ceremony. Then her coaches yelling and scolding for the camera, and all the tears.

What a mess.

That Japanese bronze medalist took the show I thought.

Something is askew about this whole enterprise when you realize that Norway (pop. 5.4 million) is dominating the entire world in this competition.

Kamila Valieva will likely be discarded and forgotten by the machine that made her. They will just crank out another skater that is just as talented but without the baggage. It’s all business to the adults around her.
