Two become one? (iMac + MacBook Pro) WWYD?

My 27" iMac (2015?) has been my main machine for many years. It has all my music, photos, and files on it. For the past year or so, however, I find that I use my 13" MacBook Pro (2020) daily, seldom starting up my desktop at all. Consequently, I purchased a portable 2TB SSD from OWC with the intention of putting all my music, photos, etc. from my iMac onto it and then selling it, making my laptop my one and only.
What's the best way to go about doing this?

I use a 14" MacBook Pro M1 Pro along with a 27" USB-C LG Ultrafine display. Gets you the best of both worlds. The best part is that the single USB-C cable from the display connects the MacBook for video as well as charging and USB connectivity for keyboard and mouse.

Google it up, but pretty sure you can just move both libraries to the external... then when you start photos in your MBP, hold down "option" and choose the library.

don't quote me on those steps... but that's close.

Clone to an external drive, and keep both systems going?

Migrate the iMac user to the laptop and use either user.

Clone to an external and manually migrate files to the laptop user?

What's your intention?

Do you want to have only one music/photos/video library when you're done, or two?

What do you want things to look like when you're done?

My intention is to end up with one machine. Just one library of each.
What I really wanted was a laptop that would be large enough storage-wise to hold all my files and libraries, but I didn't want to spend upwards of $3k to do so. I opted for an external drive solution instead. I'm just not sure of the best approach to accomplish this. Waitin4CJ suggested cloning the iMac to the SSD and going from there, but we wanted to explore if other options are available.

This is pretty much my ultimate goal. Tell me, please, which display you bought. When I search for "27" USB-C LG Ultrafine" there are too many results, ranging from a couple of hundred dollars to over one thousand.

… the intention of putting all my music, photos, etc. from my iMac…

If you don’t have music and photos in the laptop, copy the music and photos folder from your iMac to de external.
Then go to preferences on each program, and select the external library.

If you have libraries in the laptop, merge unto the external.

As for the etceteras, well… do something similar.

I’d make sure the Apple ID is the same, so notes, and all the iCloud files are shared or synced.

That is actually another possibility, to use iCloud’s photo and music services so you would not normally have to connect the external, but the flexibility is not free.

Just buy whats in your budget. 27" or 32" 4K. I have no problem recommending Dells. get one with a movable stand.

highly rated, with USB C: [www.dell.com]

same monitor, no USB C (not important unless you want to charge from screen) and $100 less: [www.dell.com]

or 32" curved...[www.dell.com]

I use this one: [www.lg.com] but those Dell one's would work just fine as well. The thing to look out for is to make sure it does charging over the USB-C with enough watts for your device. Some of the USB-C monitors don't do charging.

I think you should consider a NAS so you can access your storage away from your desk as well. I'm surprised NASs are as expensive as they are but they're certainly nice. You could set one up on a Raspberry Pi for cheap but I'm not sure if you're that adventurous.

Cloud storage could also be an option depending upon how much you need to store.
