Huh. I did not know that.

Wikipedia adds that his parents were immigrants to the US from Romania and Ukraine (prolly USSR at the time).

Also, that Alpert co-founded A+M records (with a guy named Jerry Moss, thus “A+M”)

Personal tidbit: as a teen, I found this album cover strangely umm…compelling, y’know?

I love learning stuff! Let's make this a weekly topic!

San Antonio, TX (in the old city)

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater

I'm not sure if I formally was told this, but I always assumed he was Jewish.

Interesting story about Monticello. The documentary is currently being streamed at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. I believe my parents bought a subscription, so I'll have to check it out.

Do a google search for 'monticello levy family'. There are lots of informative entries and articles going back decades.

As a 10-11 year old boy, I studied this cover intensely. I also loved the music!

As did I, as a post-teen.

Hm.

I never had reason to consider an artist's religion or lack of, and thinking back, have no memory of anything that would make me think he's Jewish.

I knew that bit about A&M, but that's the sum total of any knowledge outside of his music.

I have no interest at all. It's none of my business. AFAIC that's personal and private. Talking about "that guys' religion" has always made me uncomfortable.

That seems about right to me. If someone's bona fides become paramount before reading positions or arguments, it would seem they've already lost any perspective needed to weigh the arguments in any rational way.

Not that that's ever stopped me from from jumping to irrational conclusions...

...but that wuz them, not me!

It's a pride thing. Sort of like St Patrick's Day only with more Nobel Prizes.
