This afternoon I received an email from McAfee Identity Theft Protection (which I received as part of the T-Mobile breach settlement) informing me that:

Identity Theft Protection by McAfee detected a match to your Social Security Number.

Is the email actually from McAfee? I've been getting spam from Costco and Kohls that are not from Costco and Kohls...

Why would T-Mobile need your social in the first place?

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

I don't know about T-Mobile, but have run into companies requiring your SS# when applying for services. It makes it easy for them to run a credit check.

My guess is yes.

They ran our credit when we got their old-guy Magenta plan and included new iPhones, trading in old iPhones. They charge a discounted amount monthly for the new phones over 2 years. I presume they did the credit because we were walking out of the store with pretty expensive phones that we hadn't paid for up-front.
