NFL star quarterback Matthew Stafford is being slammed on social media for his reaction to seeing a photographer fall off a high stage during the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl victory parade and rally. The woman broke her back and her camera equipment.

The Rams held their victory parade and rally in Los Angeles on Wednesday after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday. During the festivities, a video stream caught a photographer shooting a smartphone photo of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. As she backs up for a wider view, she accidentally slips and falls backward from the platform that was about 10 feet above the ground.

In a video clip circulated on social media, Stafford appears to see the woman’s fall, mouth “Oh my God” to his shocked wife, Kelly, and then turn around and walk away while taking a swig from a water bottle.

The woman who fell was freelance photographer Kelly Smiley, who works as a photo editor for the NFL, NBL, and NHL. In a since-deleted Tweet published on Wednesday night, Smiley stated that she was okay but waiting in the emergency room for X-Ray results. She added that both of her cameras broke in the fall.

The wider video shows that whatever the event was over and people were just milling about. His wife hurried to the edge and interacted with those below that were adding the injured woman. The story does indicate the couple is helping with medical and camera bills. This is a very generous act as they did not cause this fall. I noted that in the prior post.

I'm not defending him because I don't know that you can. His reaction was pretty damming. But he was definitely smashed, and he barely saw it out of the corner of his eye. I'm not convinced he fully understood what happened.

Which is too bad. He was an event VIP; starting QB of the team everyone’s there to see. As he was undoubtably very aware, there were a ton of people there to see to his every need, not least of which was security.

He sees her fall and calls out, ‘Hey! Problem here! Somebody’s hurt!’, heads snap around, people jump to it.

He could have used his juice to turn ‘something going on over there’ into A Situation, getting handled. Unfortunately, he had a heat on and missed the opportunity to be a mensch.

He and the spouse are stepping up with a helping hand now, which is certainly better than a sharp stick in the eye.

who makes a stage that seems to be about 7-8 feet tall without a protection rail or something else to prevent falls like this? Where is OSHA?

It was a one time use platform erected outside the LA Colosseum, the QB was three sheets to the wind - it's doubtful her backward fall even registered.

Except for the video that clearly shows it did.

There’s really no need to make excuses for him. Something bad happened right in front of him. He clearly saw it. He was just too sauced to give the best possible response.

@#$%& happens. It’s not like he was there providing security. Embarrassing, sure, but there’s no reason to think he was intentionally being a dork. Wrong time, wrong place.

I worked at several Super Bowls and helped erect many such structures. All engineering had to be preapproved, and all were extensively inspected before use.
