help me buy a new kitchen TV
Posted by: chopper

For my wife ...

We have a Tivo unit hooked up to the current kitchen TV.

We'd like to upgrade to a TV with its own wireless connection--Tivo has it now via an external modem. We'd also like a TV internally set up for OTA TV ... any suggestions?

How big are kitchen TVs nowadays?

Why not just use the TiVo app on an iPad to watch your recorded shows and you can watch the 4 channels recording live TV if you have a modern TIVo.

I honestly cannot fathom why anyone would want a "kitchen TV" (or a bedroom TV for that matter).

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I would think almost any tv would do a good job in the kitchen. For low cost I have two LG - 43UN7300PUF and really like them. If the location isn’t wired for OTA you could add a network tuner somewhere in the house.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

How else do you watch porn in the bedroom hands-free?

I used to feel that way about kitchen TVs, but the house we bought last year had one that the previous owners left and we watch it all the time. Mainly news, but the wife’s iMac is setup on the breakfast bar and she’ll watch stuff there a lot.

Bedroom TV is only used for news in the morning. When my alarm goes off, I like to watch the news for about 15 minutes before I get up.

Wonderful cooking shows with great recipes, davester. Not to mention watching a movie, e.g., while cooking...

couldn't fit a TV anywhere in the kitch unless I hung it. and there's still no logical place to put one.
iPad would come in handy thought. currently it's just the phone.
but if you're gonna, TCL/Roku 32". Under $200.
Anything smaller I think would be a monitor and you provide the OTA.

We had a 19 inch in the kitchen and I like to have it to watch some news or sports while I'm cooking dinner. It was dying and got a basic 720p Insignia from Best Buy for $100.
It isn't an amazing TV, but it serves its purpose.

I would guess this is not for critical viewing, but a Kitchen is also probably a bright space so you are gonna want an equally bright TV. Think about viewing angles too- OLED would give you very wide area but probably not as bright an a LCD at this point.

About the only TV I watch is in the kitchen while I'm eating lunch. But unless it's Match Game between 1 and 2pm, I hardly bother even switching it on.

The only OTA TV I watch nowadays is 30 mins of local news in the kitchen during morning breakfast on an iPad with one of those covers that folds back and acts as a stand.

85% Crime, accidents, and death
15% Sports, weather, traffic, and a smidge of International

Good luck in your wife's search!

How do you manage to even get up in the morning after watching 15 minutes of news?

Local news:
latest murders and court cases
local weather:
70º today, 35º tomorrow
local sports:
our team lost another close one
national/international news
get back under the covers

Don't laugh, but ... in my kitchen, I have a TV for which I paid a grand total of $0. Picked it up off my local Nextdoor app as a discard from someone upgrading (you might also look on Craigslist)... there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, they were just upgrading.

It's a 32" Sony and has one of the best pictures I've seen, for a regular LCD-- it honestly beats my newer/larger TCL. I corner-mounted it fairly high up, using a reasonably priced mount off Amazon, so it's out of the way.

The only thing ... because it is relatively old ... it lacks wireless, so I got a Roku stick for that, based on the recommendations here.

Does it see a lot of use? No, but it's great for having something going in the background if I'm cooking, cleaning, etc.
