Painting garage floor

I have a nice garage but the paint on the floor is probably original, 27 years old, and it looks pretty sad. I'm going to hire the job done but wanted to get some advice first. Is there anything I should look out for or anything I should insist on? Thanks.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

When they tell you how long to let it cure before you drive on it, do exactly what they say. Driving on it before it is fully cured is a very bad idea.

When I built my new garage a few years ago, I used a 4-layer (base, color chips, 2 clear topcoats) system from these guys (they sell to individuals but are mostly focused on professional installers: www.garagecoatings.com

Their install guide for the epoxy product says "all concrete shall be clean and bare." So at minimum I'd talk to the installer(s) you're looking at working with and get their position on media blasting/grinding off the existing paint and what their warranty will be if they do or if they don't.

I'd say the main thing is making sure you're down to bare, clean concrete. Along with what others said.

Yep, proper prep is often more, or at least just as, important than the application.

find out what paint they're gonna use.
research paints for concrete
prep and clean meticulously
do not settle for less than three coats if just 'paint'
get ready for @#$%& post VOC paints...

Then?

Consider a good quality, actual 2 part industrial Epoxy paint...
several generous coats are important..
and make sure the dudes know how to use it.
Add some texture to it or it'll be slippery...

ALso..wait for temperatures to be ideal for application of whatever crap you use..it's too cold here for that.

Are you DIYing it or having a pro come?

And are you talking paint? Or epoxy?

Cheapest epoxy company I could find wanted $3.50 sf. — over $2500.

Might be cheaper and easier to find an appreciation for the patina :-)
