Why can't air-fryer/toaster ovens take 13" baking pans?
Posted by: Filliam H. Muffman

I bugged me 15 years ago when I bought a counter top convection/rotisserie/toaster oven that none of my 13 inch pans would fit. I finally found a pan that barely fit but it's not deep enough to cook a full lasagna. It still seems to be the case today. Some advertise fitting a 13 inch pizza, but that's it. None of the manufacturers seem to make alternate accessory pans to buy, so what is the limitation?

Huge power savings, and won't heat a kitchen up like a full sized oven will. I made sure my toaster convection oven will fit those 40 oz frozen lasagnas and other entrees in those trays.

Yeah, mine is like 1/2" too narrow for my 9x13 baking dishes. Really irritating.

Filliam,

It 100% depends on the make and model. I have a standard sized Breville Smart Oven. My most commonly used pan is a standard quarter-sheet jelly roll pan (aka sheet pan). However, it can accommodate a baking dish or pan that is 13" x 11" x 4". I reduced the depth enough to ensure a little clearance between the top of the disk and the heating element. So, I could make a small lasagna in it.

If the Brevelle were to go kablooey, I'd make sure its replacement can accommodate my favorite quarter-sheet pan from Chicago Metallic and my Williams-Sonoma aluminum cake pan. The 1/4 sheet pan is the Chicago Metallic Commercial II Traditional Uncoated Jelly-Roll Pan. I can't find a link to it anymore. There are similar sized jelly roll pans from reputable companies.

The Williams-Sonoma pan I have has been discontinued but it is similar to this one:

FWIW, the common countertop oven isn't intended to replace a full-sized oven/range. Never has been, never will be. They are intended to supplement them. For some, though, a properly sized countertop oven is incredibly capable. Prior to getting married, I used my Breville as an regular oven far more than the actual oven in my apartment. It's that capable and good.

There are some examples that can barely fit *some* pans (I would prefer not to buy all new pans, trying to be green), or edge case examples that will take 15" pans.

My basic question still hasn't been answered.

Why can't (the typical) air-fryer/toaster ovens take 13" baking pans? They only need to be about 3/4" wider inside to fit up to the 2nd standard deviation. Is there a manufacturing issue that prevents them from being bigger? Are typical rolls of stainless steel are too narrow? Is it a stock/packaging issue where a 3/4" wider box won't fit in easy multiples on pallets or into shipping containers?

Filliam,

The answer is in my response. If you want a countertop oven that can accommodate a larger pan or baking dish, you have to buy accordingly. Manufacturers make them. You happen to purchase a model that isn’t sized properly for your usage. That isn’t a manufacturer problem. It’s a Filliam problem.

Both my old Pany NB-W250 and its replacement, Toshiba AC25CEW
CTOs both use standard 1/4 Size 9 1/2" x 13" sheet pans. The pans slide
in the same slots the rack tray uses. Use 1/4 sheet pan, no rack needed!

Both will hold a 12" pizza pan on a rack tray.
1/4 size pans start @ $4 each at The Restaurant Store

This might be the reason so many ovens are about the same size, to take these 9-1/2" x 13" pans.

Some might have been misled by me saying "baking" pans. I want something that can fit a lasagna pan with handles.

I disagree. Most retailers don't stock any larger ovens like that. If it's so easy to find them, post links to 10 models (or 5 models from different manufacturers that are not just rebranded) with specs of:
- under $250 MSRP
- less than 2" wider (to qualify as "similar size")
- minimum 1200 Watts
- listed interior dimension to take a 4-5 qt, 9" x 13" pan with handles (OXO/Libbey/Pyrex as example)

Filliam,

Your requirements are unrealistic. You’re unlikely to find many, if any, countertop ovens that meet _all_ of those requirements because what your looking for is a larger countertop oven. None of the lower end and midrange models will meet those requirements. If you want a machine that can do the job, be prepared for a limited selection and be ready to spend the bucks for one. You’ll find them from Breville and a few other brands. They are not cheap.

FWIW, you can get the Breville Smart Oven like mine or a very similar Cuisinart for less than $250 via sales and/or coupons. I paid less than $250 for my Breville. They’ll hit most but not all of your requirements. If you’re not finding appliances that hit all if them, I’d say you’re not really looking or you’re looking at the wrong class of machine. You’ll need to go for a larger higher end machine. They are out there and they ain’t cheap.

fwiw, like microwaves; most convection toaster ovens are made by the
Midea Group, the world's largest producer of household appliances. That
includes the 'big name' expensive CTOs; made under contract to brand
specs.

August,

That's the thing. A countertop oven like the Breville Smart Oven and the common toaster oven or toaster oven-broiler from a company like Black & Decker are different classes of appliances. Countertop ovens tend to be larger and more capable than the common toaster oven or toaster oven-broiler.

The type Filliam wants is large even for the countertop oven class of appliances. The requirement of 9" x 13" pan _with handles_ by itself dictates it. That and due to size necessary to acommodate it, $250 or less isn't going to happen. Unlikely even with discounts and coupons an such. He has to be prepared to adjust both the physical space requirements and the price tag.

This would be less of an issue if the 9" x 13" pan with handles was a 9" x 13" pan without handles. Even SmartOven handles a 9" x 13" pan without handles.

I got my current convection oven for $89 on sale, but that was about 15 years ago. old fogey smiley Looks like I need to adjust to $299 on sale so that Robert won't insult me.

I will work up a spreadsheet, looks like there are at least 15 that fit all my specs, except for fitting a lasagna pan with handles. About 75% of models with greater than 20 qt capacity will fit a 13" pan. It takes a little work to find the inside width but most will say in specs or online questions if they will fit a 12" or 13" pizza.

Still the same question, why isn't there a company that makes one just 2" wider? Why is one that is only 2" wider, "completely unrealistic?"

On point again, Robert. If you need it, search for it, and then pay for it. If it doesn't exist, and you think it should, make the market for it. I use Cuisinart Chef's Toaster Oven with 9x13 Corning ware with no handles. I use it everyday. I wouldn't cook lasagna in it, but I could if that was my choice. I identified it as a desired replacement and waited a long time for a great deal to appear, then immediately snapped it up.

Filliam,

Why just 2" wider? Why not 3" wider? or 4" wider? This is a case of where the manufacturer design the product and you need to adapt to it, not the other way around. When it comes to countertop ovens, I suspect they designed them to accommodate standard sized pans and a wide variety of commonly used sized dishes (without factoring in handles). That is why a standard regularly available off-the-shelf quarter-sheet pan works in most of the larger countertop ovens from companies like Brevelle, Cuisinart and Ninja.

Baking dishes are tough because they far from standardized. There are common interior dimensions but that's where it stops. The exterior dimension can vary tremendously based on design and handles. A dish's interior may be Y x Z but that isn't the critical measurement. Even my Pyrex 11" x 7" dish is actually 13" x 7.5" and my Corningware 10" x 10" baking dish is actually 12" x 10". The handles make the difference. I have other baking dishes with much larger handles. The dish would fit easily in my Breville if I cut the handles off.

Like I said... If you want a countertop oven that can accommodate your dishes, you have to measure them and buy accordingly. Or, tally the measurements and bring a tape measure with you when you go to the store.

Not even close to exhaustive. With the exception of the Oster french door model srf1957 posted, I only found one other oddball (Best Choice) that would likely fit my lasagna pan. Both of those were under $180. Not sure if I would trust the no-name from Wally-world, and their prices were odd. The Instant Port they had was almost half price at Bez-azon.

Filliam,

Same answer and no surprise. I'll also go a step further and say maybe that pan isn't intended for use in a countertop oven. As I've said before a countertop oven isn't intended to replace your regular oven/range. It's a supplemental appliance. Sounds like you're asking countertop oven to use equipment intended for a standard oven. Again, this is a Filliam issue, not a manufacturer issue.

If you look at your list, it is an incredibly incomplete and has items that never had any hope of accommodating quarter-sheet pan, let alone your lasagna dish. Why include them on the list? Where are retailers that are known for kitchen appliances, i.e. Sur La Table, Bed Bath and Beyond, Macys, etc? Looks to me like you really haven't researched what is out there.

Robert
