Gas prices!
Posted by: lost in space

I went out to run some errands this afternoon and was flabbergasted at gas prices here in E. WA. They've gone up at least $.50/gal in a few days, up to around $4.10. Now I see that California's are up to $5.00 or more, with Napa County highest in the state, averaging $5.46. Sheeyut! I've never felt so lucky about gas prices. It was expected, but it's so sudden. Probably not the end of it either. What's happening where you are?

About $4.35 on up here in Seattle. Looks like yours lagged ours by a few weeks.

Someone I know posted a picture last night of gas well over $5/gal in Seatac (city south of Seattle.) It's gone up by 60¢/gal in the last week, and about 85¢/gal in the past couple weeks.

We were driving through one small town outside the city and there was a Chevron at $4.19. We stopped and filled up.

It just went above $5 for regular unleaded. Some stations are advertising a price that is a quarter lower, but that is for E88 used by Flexfuel vehicles. People are filling up with it thinking it is the same as regular unleaded, just cheaper. The car runs fine for now but there will likely be problems if they use it longterm.

And E85 contains 27% less energy by volume, so you aren't saving anything, you are throwing money away and likely harming your vehicle. Toyota says anything over E10 is harmful to my Prius. MY old Buick will burn anything, but a high alcohol content will damage the rubber in the fuel system until I rebuild with silicone seals.

E10 is about a 3% fuel economy hit. They never tell you that. And that 3% hit really underscores why gasahol is a big fat fallacy here.

We went from 5.79 Friday to 6.19 today and probably more as we go on....

Thankful we started the EV transition 18 months ago.

It's going to be tough to swallow any long distance RV trips this spring or summer...most of our trips are pretty short anyways.

I’m paying the same as last year for electricity for our two PHEVs. No change in a few years from our local co-op. But the nearby area is connected to Big Power and those folks are getting slammed.

Is there any indication that crude output has dropped, or is this all just gouging because the market is scared?

$5.73 is the cheapest today for regular in my little town (6 gas stations total).

It's $4.52 thirty miles up the coast and across the state line in Brookings, OR.

I'm debating ... does it make more sense to buy now or wait? (I tend to buy in 20 gal amounts, save it using fuel stabilizer, and it lasts me for a LONG time, like 3-4 months at least...)

It really sucks, Winn-Dixie discontinued its FuelRewards program with Shell. Otherwise, I would have been getting something like $1.25 off per gal! (This one time, I got my 20 gals for about $13...)

Then that tells me that they can refine crude, and transport product to Ohio, and still make a profit a $3.76. So prices well over $4 a gallon are gouging, in my opinion.

That is flat out price gouging.

This. It doesn't have to be this expensive. Yes, Putin's insanity is a factor but not the whole reason. That discussion would get this thread bumped to the Other Side.

And you EV drivers-don't forget that if your electricity comes from a coal-fired power plant you're putting more carbon in the air charging your vehicle. And the Powers That Be will be starting a tax on EVs to make up for losing the gas taxes.

Also, I just saw that car insurance is up to 30% higher for an EV...

I've been following crude and gas prices for over 35 years. A relative of mine was heavily invested in gas and oil stocks and maybe that's why I became interested in tracking this stuff long ago.

First off there's no shortage of crude and gasoline. What I'm about to say is not propaganda, been using the website below for a long time.

In 2018 they had almost 1100 total rigs pumping oil and gas, that’s one reason it was so cheap. Then Covid came along and the rig count dropped to as low as 244 and Crude went into negative territory. As of February 25th it's still only back up to 650 total rigs. An excellent way for them to control the price. Want to to control price just keep the valves shut. Watch the quarterly profit report when it comes out for this quarter. OPEC also has not got back to pre-Covid levels.

If anyone wants to verify these numbers just go here and click on the 5 year graph.

often a large portion of the gas price is related taxes.

My county is always a nickel higher than surrounding counties because of taxes. But we are a penny cheaper on sales tax. People complain without knowing the facts.

Filled up at BJ's today at $3.96/gal. There were about 10 bays, each with at least two vehicles waiting. First time I've waited in a line for gasoline since the odd/even days of 1974.

While I was pumping, the guy was changing the sign to $3.99/gal.

The price of oil will impact everything. Oil is used for farming and fertilizer. The cost of certain grains has jumped 37% in the last few weeks. So, you should care as it impacts the cost of everything except air.

So does GA. I believe it's up to $230 for a full EV. doesn't apply to the Volt though unless you want the Eco plate that allows driving in the HOV lane with only the driver.

$4.85/gal for regular on base (Pendleton & NEX) is now the least expensive in the far southwest corner. But unless you have access, you'll pay much more. Least expensive off base is $5.39/gal at a few independents.

The "top tier" stations are more than $5.39/gal, and freeway stations - best to keep on driving. A few are over $6/gal. California gets slammed because of the excessive state taxes on gasoline. Gotta pay for those express lanes somehow …
