Anyone still actively using a Mac with a pre-OS X operating system?

I'm trying to help someone on Reddit convert an old System 7 sound file (sfil) to something that can be played on a modern Mac. The file is an old audio recording of the Redditor's dad, who has subsequently passed away.

File Juicer supposedly has the ability to extract the sound file portion from an sfil file, but when I use it to convert the file I get an error message that the file is damaged.

Is anyone have a pre-OS X Mac handy that we could use to try to play this file? I do believe it is in fact damaged, but I figure the best way to ascertain that is to try to play it in its native environment. Please reply to this message or DM me if you are able and willing to help.

It is what it is.

last year I found an app that could play Sys7 sounds - not convert. If you still need it, I'll check in tomorrow and see if I can dig it up.

I have a couple of G4 towers; I haven’t fired them up for a little while, but they are pretty accessible. I also found a program several years ago that was able to convert them to .mp3, and I’m sure I still have a copy somewhere. I’m about to go to sleep, but will gladly help tomorrow.

I have OS7 running with Basilisk II (under Big Sur) in order to bring back some old DayMaker files. Works well.
Now If I could just a way to bring back some same era Quicken files I thought I'd never need to look at.

QuickTime Player 7 will open and export SFIL files. Do you have a Mac running an OS prior to Catalina?

This used to work. Not sure what OS it tops out at:
[systemsoundext.sourceforge.net]

Here's a prebuilt QEMU image for running Mac OS 9.2 on either Apple Silicon or Intel if that helps:

I seem to remember an "OS9 Forever" group / movement. I have no idea if anyone there is still alive and kicking.

My MBP runs High Sierra. I've already tried to use the version of QT installed on it to play this file, with no success.

I'll give this app a go.

Nice! And it runs on High Sierra! This one goes into my OS X system software archive.

But, alas, no joy - it could not open the file, which I am now 100% certain is damaged.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions!
