You know what,

$7,999 for a top spec M1Ultra MacStudio:

20-core CPU
48-core GPU
128GB Memory
8TB SSD

I'm not mad about that. I'm not gonna buy it, but I'm not mad.

27" iMac is officially dead.

Looks like I can get a 2020 27" 3.8 i7, 1 TB, 5700XT for $2200.

What I would want... is $2600 -- for "budget" max chip, 64 GB ram and 1 TB SSD. and still need a monitor.

$1600 for a 5k display... Anyone interested?

A comparable 27" 4K HDR display might be $900. Not some bottom of the line no name, which is $400. And no USB C hub or speakers that have the same punch, or web cam.

Its apple, so of course its over priced... but not by much.

Ive been looking at Dell 32" 4K Ultrasharps... $1149. Although often on sale for $950.

A lot of peeps prob wanted a 32" but, apple prob worried about pro display sales. honestly tho, anyone that is the market for a $5000 display would never look at a $1500 one anyway. stupid.

I wish Apple would have made a "dumb" display at a discount for those of us running multiple displays. Don't need three sets of speakers, web cams, A13 chips... But in the end, that's probably not that much of the overall cost. Would be cool if they could make use of three sets of speakers to enhance the "surround" experience though!

When I eventually jump into M1 land though, I'll probably go back to one souped up laptop with displays and have to give up the separate desktop and laptops.

110%. They kept showing 2-3 monitor setups and you are essentially paying double for stuff you will never use.

Im sure the speakers are great and all... but even a simple $50 set of 2.1s with a sub will blow them out of the water. Or hundreds of others at $99.

I saw klipssh BT promeidas for $80 the other day... huge sound

i would welcome a move up from my current machine, a loaded late 2015 27" i7.

mac studio M1Max looks tempting.

i need a powerful PS/LR still editing platform.

i need a powerful Final Cut Pro/DaVince Resolve video editing platform.

i wonder if there is a big performance boast going from 24 core to 32 core (+$180)?

i wonder if I can use my present 27" imac 5k display with the mac studio M1Max?

too bad all of this could not be crammed into a 27" imac with Apple silicon.

but Apple does have my attention.

thumbs up.

M1Ultra looks good. Glad they did not anchor it to an expensive display, but can it run an 8K display at 120 Hz?

I agree, but for 5-7 years people have been saying "if only Apple could give us a display that's a 5K iMac without the Mac internals...even at the same price. They've finally done that.

Yep. And I'm sure it's *possible*, it would be a logical next iMacPro, but given what was shown today I doubt they will actually ever build this level of relative performance into an AIO like the iMac.

Nope, that feature is gone. Im sure they could have.

But agree with others that it *is* kind of the mac many people have been asking for... headless 27" iMac. Mini has never been a real replacement for a 27" imac -- missing GPU and more powerful CPUs.

base Studio + 64 GB + 1TB = $2500. Add a decent $500 32" 4K screen = about the same cost as a previous 27" iMac. You are going down 1K, but getting a larger screen... and tons more performance.

The cost to jump memory from 32 to 64 is awful.

I still don't think I can stomach Monterey

jdc-

thanks for the sharing.

i was looking forward to your insights.

no thoughts on possible performance boost from 24 cores to 32 cores?

(and on side note, back in the day, i heavily relied on dell monitors for their color accuracy and value)

thumbs up.

jdc,

I'm one of the people who's been clamoring for a headless iMac aka a non-all-in-one prosumer desktop machine. Obviously, the Mac Studio isn't exactly what I wanted in a prosumer desktop. I'd've wanted it to have a user-upgradeable SSD, user-upgradeable RAM and a single PCI Express expansion slot. We all know the days of some of this are long past. What Apple gave us is a solid next generation prosumer desktop Mac.

Why am I calling the Mac Studio a prosumer machine? Because at some point Apple is going to release an Apple Silicon based Mac Pro and it's going to blow the doors off the Mac Studio. At that point, Apple will have it's laptops. It'll have it's all-in-one desktops. And, Apple will finally have a complete set of headless machines.

The irony. I would not buy a Mac Studio. It isn't because I wouldn't want one. It'd be awesome to have one. I'd actually buy an M1 Mac Mini, give it 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD and couple it to an LG 5K display.

The cost would be about $2500.00 or so.

The reason I'd go this route is because I have a 2019 iMac 5K with the top of the line video card and visually, a 4K display would be a step backwards. So, for $2500 or so, I get an Apple Silicon based equivalent to my current 27" iMac 5K.

'course, if I had the extra bucks and wanted a Mac Studio based configuration, I'd get the base model with a 1TB SSD and couple it to LG 5K display.

All in all, I'm happy with this move by Apple. Many people who might have purchased a Mac Pro are going to get a Mac Studio instead. Once Apple replaces the current Mac Pro with an Apple Silicon based version, many people are _still_ going to get a Mac Studio. It's a seriously powerful machine for a surprisingly fair price.

The difficult decisions between an iMac, a Mac Mini + display and Mac Studio + display will show up after Apple releases an Apple Silicon based 27" iMac 5K or an Apple Silicon based 27" iMac 4.5K. That's when people are going to have to decide which is better bang for the buck, an Apple Silicon all-in-one or a Apple Silicon headless desktop coupled with a kick butt display.

I bet an Apple Silicon based 27" iMac will end up offering better bang for the buck than a Mac Mini or Mac Studio coupled to a separate display. That's what happened with the Intel iMacs and Mac Mini and display and I think history will repeat itself.

Robert

When you consider the Mac Pro starts at $6000 and has significantly less oomph,,, the Studio sounds like quite a deal.

Its gonna have to be a Studio + screen if she needs the power. 24" iMac is just a mini. If the mini was enough, then mini + any 27" 4K screen.

32" Budget LG at $350, non adjustable stand: [www.amazon.com]

32" Dell $450, curved, adjsutable: [www.dell.com]

of course, tons more 27" 4K.
