Call me a Luddite, staying with DSLR format for awhile longer

Recently managed to get ahold of Canon 90D to replace my old 50D. I thought about a mirrorless. Several advantages - smaller, lighter, quieter, good vids. But I like a camera with a little more girth to tote around my birding lens, Canon EF100-400mm series 1. Plus the old 50D can take a punch. Last year I slipped off a log and fell into a creek with it. Got a little wet and muddy but no worse for wear. Not the first time its been banged around in the bush.

The extra pixels and low light capabilities in the 90D makes for more to work with. For a 20 (?) year old lens the 100-400mm has held up pretty good. I supposed it would function as well on a mirrorless but it would throw me off balance Camera . I think the image quality is fine.

Junko, small bird, good lighting, minimal post processing with PS - EF100-400mm - 400mm, f/6.3, 1/160, ISO 100.

Chickadee, even smaller bird, low light, looked like a really lousy capture out of the camera, way under exposed, shot in the shade at close range with a bright background behind. Cleaned up OK after with PS. 400mm,1/160, f/5.6, ISO 200

nice bird shots - getting those black eyes on a black background clearly is challenging

I'll be sticking with a traditional DSLR for a while too.

A 150 year old wooden view camera still does the job it was designed and built to do. Use a modern lens.

MILC is just a smaller package.

There are some good deals to be had by people selling all their gear to jump to mirrorless platforms. SLR are great for people who aren't concerned about the sound of the mirror slap. There are a few other things that MILC does a tad better but not worth dumping gear like I see people doing.

Similar story here. Winter time is traditionally when I switch to my photo hobby. Last year I “committed” to taking it seriously but it didn’t happen, and this year has been even less.

I’ve written before how I view purchases as jumping off points. I picked up a mint 6D I really like, and my mint 50D makes for a beast of a webcam for work so long I accept AF remains disabled via USB (it’s not a true tether.) Any glass I might get also goes on the Elans.

But if I was serious I would not hesitate to go mirrorless, if only for truly modern AF. And remember: New lenses are only developed for mirrorless platforms. They are actually better all the time, albeit incrementally of course.

Very nice! I took the liberty of playing with your Chickadee pic:

And your Junco is perfect-you're Out West? I think it's an male "Oregon" race of Junco hyemalis. We have the "Slate-colored" Juncos here in SE lower MI.

I haven't shot anything for a long time. My trip to Magee Marsh for Warblers last May was so disappointing I didn't do a post and because of it I made the decision to stop using my beloved SX60 because (for one reason) I had so much trouble with the auto focus on a rainy and dark day that I didn't get any good images. Yes, I know-it's a poor workman who blames his tools, but the digital manual focusing of the SX60 is way too slow for Warblers anyway.

As a result, I have purchased a 100-400mm zoom for my Lumix GX-85 (equivalent to 200-800mm) and have to start practicing with it. It has manual focusing on the barrel.

So I hope to start posting some Spring birdie pix soon.

And some very nice pix, Wags...
