Pretty impressive. I can’t wait to see what the new Mac Pro can do.

The Mac Studio equipped with the new 20 core M1 Ultra SoC was benchmarked against the Mac Pro with 28 core Intel Xeon W chip. 20% faster than the Mac Pro on multi-core performance. On single core performances the M1 Ultra is 56% faster than the 28 core Mac Pro.

Something that bugged me tremendously about the keynote was that they compared the Mac Studio to the Intel 27" iMac and the current Mac Pro. I would like to see how the Mac Studio compared to current M1 based machines. I already know the Mac Studio is going to be a vast improvement over Intel machines. I want to know how it compares to Apple's other M1 based offerings, too. 'course, it might not be nearly as much of an improvement, which would make for a less striking announcement.

likely can start by using the MBP 14/16 machines as rough guides of performance, at least in the cases where you can roughly approximate the same number of CPU/GPU cores available between the models. I'm sure we'll have real-world benchmarks of the Studio within about a week when they become available (and maybe a few days before from tech journalists that get early release models to review).

Its aimed squarely at current 27" iMac/iMac Pro users wanting to upgrade and potential MPro buyers that couldn't afford a MPro.

Clay is correct, just look at a 16" MBP M1M and the numbers should be the same, give or take a few percent.

$3999 20-core M1 Ultra handily beats $12999 Mac Pro.

The Ultra is really the Mac Pro we've been asking for since 2012. Pricing is in line with the old Mac Pros.

The $1999 model goes back to the first G5 tower -- $1999. single 1.6, 256 MB ram, 80 GB drive, 64 MB vram... and that's it.

G4 towers started at $1599. First MPs were $2500.

I thought the original 2.66GHz 2006 Mac Pro was $1999 at some point--perhaps not at introduction but later? (I'm not looking it up because I don't care that much. )

Think of the Studio as replacing a 2013 Mac Pro.

Per MacTracker, starting prices were $2,999 (Quad-Core) $3,999 (6-Core).

Powerful machine, no doubt. What puts me off a bit is that memory and storage is not user upgradeable and you’re stuck with either 64GB or 128GB RAM( +$800.) at the time of ordering. I imagine there will be work around in time but bumping up to 128GB RAM and a 2TB SSD on the Ultra brings the price up to $5,199.

If you apply the "M1 ram = acts like 2X as much" then you could say its 256 GB of ram...

Storage is a non issue for me. 1-2 TB, whevert is enough for your internal stuff. External 4TB NVMe is $550 DIY (I built one). Get 8 TB for $1000 ish. Get over 3000/MB/s RWs.

Yeah, so many unknowns. And so many extra little processors... prores, neural engine, T2, etc. How they all handle things like video and whatever else processor intensive will have to be seen.

We already know how the M1M performs, just wonder how much more the M1U will allow it to expand.

Yeah I am coming to this realization with my M1 Max w/32GB memory. Kinda wishing I had the 64GB. Not sure if it's just the fact that the 32 is shared cpu/gpu memory, or if it's a Monterey thing, (or maybe even a non-M1 native software thing?), but I have been noticing hiccups here and there while using it for work.

Things like the playhead in Audition not tracking smoothly as audio plays, audio playback not starting immediately in iZotope RX, not to mention an occasional 3+ second delay in video playback from a timeline in Premiere. Stuff that the 2015 MBP seemed to handle better with just 16GB RAM. But, overall render times are shorter so I am generally pleased with the M1 Max but as I said some things just seem slower or worse than I expected.

Also, I am thinking anyone with an M1 PRO won't be feeling very PRO once the actual M1 MacPro is announced.

… a non-M1 native software thing?
