Followup to: this stuff is great, but can I find cheaper elsewhere?

OP here: [forums.macresource.com]

... ordered the $7.50 roll of 1 inch x 15 feet, it just arrived today. Looks to be decent quality, I would say not quite as good quality as the more expensive stuff, but obviously much less expensive. The only thing I'm not crazy about -- it's a light blue color. Still, at that price, I can't complain too much...

Ehhh, it could be worse ... I've seen far worse colors for band-aids and bandages. Bright fluorescent chartreuse for example.

Edit: forgot to mention, this DOES appear to be the same stuff as used for minimizing the appearance of scars. For this price, that's a great deal.

I would think the blue color would draw attention to the scar

I wonder if it would work on surgery scars? I have a few significant surgeries coming up in the next few years.

Yes, that's what this kind of tape is designed for ... to reduce the appearance of scars. It is different from regular surgical tape though... regular surgical tape is a paper-based tape, which although is supposed to be less irritating to the skin, does nothing in terms of the appearance of scars-- and plus in my case, I discovered that I'm allergic to the adhesive used in the regular paper tapes. (I was using the paper tape before I tried the silicone-based tape, and not only was it really hard to get off without losing a lot of hair, but I found the adhesive nearly impossible to get rid of, even using hand sanitizer to try to dissolve the adhesive... and with the adhesive still there, my skin started to itch like crazy.)

And yes, the light blue color is fairly obvious compared to the regular flesh color of this kind of tape, but on the other hand... in my case, I'm not using it for that purpose, though even if I were-- likelihood is good that the scars might be in areas where the tape wouldn't be that visible anyway.

I've had several surgeries recently, and I'm allergic to medical adhesives.

The tape from the bandages -- which needed to be changed at least daily -- left a square scar on my side.

I realized after awhile that the affects on my skin were greatly worsened by the use of Chlorhexidine. It made the difference between "red and itchy" and "blistered, weepy and permanently scarred."

I asked the technicians and surgeons to use something else to clean the site and was able to tolerate the adhesives much better. Too late to avoid scarring, but it could have been much worse.

You might benefit from that as well. They don't have to use Chlorhexidine.

...Wish I had thought to try silicone tape at the time. Dunno if it was the better solution. But I've got a shopping list that I put together for the next round based on my experiences the first time through and I've added it to the list. Thanks!

Chlorhexidine is nasty stuff, and I'm surprised they still use it, when there are definitely better alternatives.

You can always do what I did, and spend the $7-8 for a 15 foot (!) roll, apply a strip of it to somewhere on your skin where you might want a scar to improve in appearance, and see how it goes: does it stay stuck to the skin, does it cause irritation/itching while attached, and does it remove cleanly/without pulling on the hairs too much/causing skin irritation. The answer to those questions for me was a definite: Yes, No, Yes. (Though I would say the $7-8 stuff doesn't stay attached quite as well as the flesh-colored type, but on the other hand... it's stayed on my skin since yesterday mostly without coming off, which is a good sign.)

The silicone adhesive is definitely different from that used either on regular bandaids/bandages and the paper tape, but strangely, the silicone-type bandaids that I tried (which I might have presumed would use the same adhesive) did NOT stay on at all... not even really when I applied them.

Edit: oh, and I forgot to mention that the eBay seller was also selling the exact same thing on Amazon, so I decided to buy from Amazon just to avoid the hassles of eBay:

(Note that it's $8 for one roll of 15 foot, but that's still way less expensive than the flesh-colored type, which usually sells for about $13 for a 60 inch roll. I decided to go with this over the clear McKesson type, because that one gets not nearly so good reviews at Amazon: [www.amazon.com])

Thanks for all the good info. One of my needed surgeries is to replace 3 disks in my neck, and there will be a visible scar somewhere on the front of my neck. I really don't want a nasty neck scar. The one on my hip from the joint replacement is pretty gnarly. You don't see it though, even in shorts.

I'm grateful that I am a candidate for disk replacement vs fusion, so I can continue to shoot rifles in competition. The way you crane your neck in a 3 axis twist would be impossible if they fuse.

I truly value the friendships I have built through competition, and learning to load my own match grade ammo, and I would hate for anything to interfere permanently.

The scar strips (aka silicone tape) really DO work for reducing the appearance of scars, but the "catch" is that you have to wear them regularly for an extended period to see an effect ... usually a minimum of 4-6 weeks. Also, they don't work nearly so well on already-formed, old scars, rather than newly formed ones.

I'm willing to at least try for the neck surgery.

Followup: I can now say for sure that the blue stuff does NOT stay on as long as the regular flesh-colored stuff -- it stayed on for two days, then showed signs of coming off, whereas the flesh-colored stuff would easily stay on longer. (Though admittedly, I put the blue stuff on a part of the body with a lot of hair, and obviously that'll make it harder for it to adhere to the skin... and also there's the fact that if it's on a part of the body where clothing will frequently rub against it, that might also affect the adhesion.)

All this being said, two days is still probably good enough for my purposes. I'm tempted to try the clear stuff to see how that compares.
