Banned words
Posted by: clyde

Tried to make a post on Macresource, got this message:

"A word you have used in your post has been banned from use. Please use a different word or contact the forum administrators."

Emailed administrators; nothing yet.

Does anyone have a list of banned words?

I expect it's a continually updated list from the phorum provider. I don't recall if it's still Dan (DealMac founder created and then sold/sells his phorum software..)

I know it's multilingual. I just drop _ in the middle of SFW words that get rejected.

Here's what I tried to post:

"Goal—transfer Safari bookmarks to Firefox (FF). Have searched and tried three different methods—all failed.

First difficulty is that the Firefox controls are different than those shown in instructions

Am using iMac 2013 with Catalina, FF 98.0.1 and Safari 15.1

FF already has bookmarks—is that causing a problem?

I could set them all manually, but would rather transfer them…

What to do? And how?

Suggestions appreciated!"

I entered this line-by-line, previewing after adding each line. The problem seems to have been that I had a URL in line two after the word "instructions." That URL would take the user to web site Leavo. After deleting that URL there was no more error message.

It's not a banned word, it's a banned website you were linking to. That location was used by spammers COUNTLESS times and is not allowed.

And actual banned words that prevent posting are rare, the more typical case is "censored words" where you can still post, but the targeted words get displayed as special characters when the post is viewed.

I hope they ban 'spic' quickly.

I get tired of seeing posted over and over and over.

It seems to be a forum favorite for name calling, given how prolific its use.

Hmm. Does the forum allow George Carlin's seven?

American comedian George Carlin first listed in his 1972 "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" monologue. The words, in the order Carlin listed them, are: "shit", "piss", "fuck", "cunt", "cocksucker", "motherfucker", and "tits".

Apparently so!! smiley-talk034

For the longest time the Electronic Nanny wouldn't allow mention of the most iconic Lamborghini of the 70s and 80s, the Countach.

Edited to add: Apparently now it's okay with it.

If you hit a word that you need to post but the nanny objects, just highlight a single letter and change the color of it. Then it will post clearly.

You don't have to "change" it per se. Just define it as black, which breaks up the word with the BB code for "000000" the filter doesn't recognize it, since it's just a patter match.

I once mentioned a website that begins with Qo and somehow I got the same rejection. I had to write to the administrators to find out which word I was using that was banned, and they politely explained.
