Guess it depends what you want out of the new display.

An iMac's 5k display is really showing an effective (and sharp) resolution of 2560 x 1440.

So, if you get a 4k 27", you're either showing a 1:1 3840 x 2160 resolution and everything will be smaller, but you'll gain "more space". Or, you use it as a "retina" display, showing 1920 x 1080p, in which case, everything will be bigger, but you'll have "less space". Or you use it at 4k resolution and you can scale up what you need to appear bigger.

I think Apple has spoiled us with the 5k retina displays, because there just aren't that many equivalent choices in standalone monitors.

If it was me, I'd go with the LG 5k monitor.

2560 x 1440 is not 4k and is not a replacement for a 5k iMac screen - your new setup will kick ass, but won't 'look' as nice.

Guess it depends what you want out of the new display. 100% this. Im spoiled by the 5K. Have have a 4K 27" dell next to my 5K iMac... just not quite the same

So now you are going from 5K to what I would call "standard" -- same screen as a 2010 27" iMac.

As long as you don't think you will miss the 4K, sure.

LG 5K is crap. everyone agrees. My needs might be diff, but I would want 32" 4K, with HDR, PCI3, etc, and some good blacks.

Well, that's a bummer, since on paper, it's the only equivalent display to a 5k iMac, outside of Apple's Studio Display.

If I went 32", which I'd really like to do, it would have to be 4K.

4K minimum would be more accurate, but I doubt I'd spend the money for a good >4K monitor.

Knowing how picky the client is going to be is really important. The $499 4k version of one of those monitors looked decent (although I've never seen one): [www.amazon.com]

You can save the client a lot of cash with a standard 27" monitor if that is good enough - best to find out.

I've got a 2017 27" imac sitting next to a $200 standard 27" screen. SIde by side, the difference is clear, but many eyes won't know the difference otherwise.

I might consider this as a true 5K upgrade... 32'' 4K, with Tbolt.

The LG 27UN850 always gets decent reviews, as well as the Pro Arts.

Since its not for you, Id stick with 4K, coming from a 5K, don't think 2K will give them the sharpness they are used to.

None of them are as nice as the iMac screen. The unique construction of the LCD panel UV bonded to the outer glass in the iMac provides a picture that cannot be duplicated with either a matte or glossy 5k display.

I have the discontinued LG27UK850, and it's great, but if I was coming from a 5k iMac, I imagine it would be a letdown. The average person won't notice the difference, but if you're used to razor sharp text, it's just not the same.

I'm in agreement that if I were going 4K+, I'd want it to be at least 32".

I have no idea how various 3rd party monitors handle the "retina" effect of using a one half effective resolution. Would they be sharp or blurry? I have no clue.

I'm getting old and my eyes suck, but I suspect for 4K at full resolution I would want a 38" monitor.

I do 4K on a pair of 32" LG monitors. Took a bit of customizing Finder windows, icon sizes and web pages, but it works for me.

I have a 27" 4k that I really like (it's an HP display). Was about $500 in the summer of 2020. Folks talk about 27" not being an appropriate size for 4k, but I have found that it works quite well for my needs. I don't recall needing to change any icon sizes, text sizes, etc. I previously had a 27" iMac.

I've got a Mac Studio ordered and hopefully here within a month that I expect to swap out for the M1 mini currently in place.

For someone that's picky, probably the studio display is the best pick for a monitor that will look great and will just work. It's just unfortunate that there are not really any truly comparable options otherwise available. Avoid the LG 5k--tons of issues with those.

They are replacing two 27-inch iMacs.

There are no M1 iMacs larger than 24", and those are not M1 Max or better. Outlook is fuzzy on larger M1 iMacs.

Yeah, tuff. I have yet to post about replacing my 2014 27" iMac just a week ago -- it died. RIP.

I *think* I want a studio, but struggling with screen, cost, OS, and fact that 64 GB models are 10-12 weeks out. (I need 64 GB)

So to solve it all, got a refrub 2020 iMac. 8 core i7, 1 TB SSD, 8 GB 5500XT, $1800. Addded 64 GB ram $250. Can even go to 128 GBs. More than enough of a jump over my 2014... and maybe a year or so from now... a studio + screen.

Yep, and they discontinued the last 27" Intel now. I have about 120 27" iMacs I need to replace. They were supposed to be on a 4 year rotation and we are now into year 4 on the newest ones and year 7 on the oldest. I REALLY need a 27" M1 Pro or Max or Ultra.

When we might see an updated larger-screened version of the *iMac* is unclear. Display analyst Ross Young initially predicted a June launch, but he later said that his sources had mixed up the *iMac* Pro and the Apple Studio Display, and that he no longer believes an *iMac* Pro is coming in the summer.

9to5Mac has said that Apple is not working on a larger-screened iMac at all, while Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes it could come out in 2023. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also said that there's an *iMac* Pro coming, but he has not given a specific launch timeline.

The new Studio Display is way overpriced when compared to an iMac with the same size display. Sadly, no other manufacturers thought 6K was a reasonable/desirable standard. The only other 'retina' display in about the same size is the somewhat overpriced Dell UP3218K ($3700).

If you have the space, one other option is a 65" 8K TV ($2500 or more), but AFIAK there is no Apple computer that will easily drive one. None have a HDMI 2.1 port. Apple again seems to be pointedly ignoring an accepted standard.

Unless you really need more than 16 GB of ram, like I did.

I say replace with 2020 refurb iMacs. Not sure the models you have, but Base 6 core models start at $1299 with 8/256.

It's very hard to source good LG displays right now. Very long back-orders.

I've been recommending Dell 27-inch ultrasharps for designers. UHD, not 4K.

4K at 27 inches makes for tiny text/icons and if you use Apple's pixel-doubling options, you lose screen real-estate.

For those doing video with multiple displays, the 4K seems to fit into the workflow a little better.

Maybe not in the short term, but that could easily be different after long term viewing.

Maybe they won't be able to articulate the difference, but going back to 2K from 4K might be really apparante to even an average person.

I remember seeing an Apple 30" Cinema Display with its 101dpi.

My 23" ACD's dpi was 98, but it looked sharper than the 30" who's pixels looked like they were spaced via a colander.

Some of us might need 'computer' glasses for 4K on a 27" display, but I think it could be worth it.

I'm just ready for a 32" display.

Seems overkill, what do they do? Im running full Adobe CC and tons of browser tabs.

I skipped the 5700XT, no video or gaming, and went with the 5500XT = $300 savings

and DIY ram. its a 30 second install. 64 GB is just over $200 if you bargin basement, $250 for name brand. Mine was $1799 -- 3.8 8 core, 8 Gb ram, 1 TB, 5500Xt. Just over $2K with the ram. Because I can, will prob bump to 128 GB. I did hit swap the other day...

FWIW, mine came with Big Sur installed, downgraded it to Catalina.

Anyone else a little angry that this whole stinking thread is about there still being no decent 5k display? We've moved from finding a display to discussing refurbs. That's fine for now, but what about 6 months from now?

I know it's a tiny market, but LG introduces new displays on a regular basis. With the 27" iMacs gone and the Studio Display falling short of expectations, let's hope they finaly roll out a new, updated model that blows the doors of the Studio Display from a value standpoint.

We have to make due with what the rest of computer users use... 4K.

Studio display is fine, good ol fashioned iMac 5K display... without the iMac. Problem is they priced it out of reach. $1199 or 1299... maybe. Cause lots of high quality 4Ks are close to $1000.

And making a 27" 5K M1 Max iMac is gonna be a no go. It would cannibalize studio + screen sales. They overlap.

Why buy a studio + screen for $3600 when I can get an identical imac for $3000? Or really any price less.

Maybe there still is an iMac pro coming. Still seriously doubt it. With an M1 Ultra, so has to *start* at *least* $5000. Prob more. Or again, cannibalizes Studio Ultra + screen sales.

So then why buy an iMac pro for $6000 when I can get a studio ultra + studio display for less...

its complicated...

For $500, you can have a decent 4k 27" display that will work well with the Mac Studio. I know my needs and workflow aren't the same as everyone's, but I'd be hard pressed to put *any* money towards an intel machine at this point. Software that still isn't 100% M1 optimized will get there. For about $2500 (base studio + 27" 4k display), you get a computer that will last far longer into the future, is much more powerful than the "equivalent" iMac, and you have a display that looks really good and can be used with computers for 10 years into the future. It's not 5k, but I don't think that there has been even one time where I've missed my 27" iMac screen compared to the 27" 4k that I've got.

And there in lies the rub. MANY 27" iMac users are not "basic" users. They weren't cheap. Sure, they started at $1800, but no storage. and still have to DIY ram.

base Studio isnt enough for 95% of my clients. 32 GB ram seems nice, but its not enough. 512 GB is OK, but its not enough. For me, My dropbox library is 120 GB on my local drive, with triple that online only. My email is POP, 100+ GB.

But everyone I know (designers) who use 27" imacs have blasted the ram to 32, 64 and more (now that ram is cheap) and they run 2 or more screens. I run 3.

M1s haven't had that capability until 3 weeks ago.

And now that we are ready... 10-12 weeks for a 64 GB/1/2 TB Studio.

Not since the 2014 model, IIRC. I couldn’t use my Late 2015 iMac as the display for my M1 mini.

Ah, so when the iMacs went to 5k screens, the "iMac as a monitor" feature went away. Which makes some sense, since it was probably harder to implement with 5k, or may have caused user confusion since not all computers then could run 5k monitors.

And even those who will be editing video (like me). Plenty of benchmarks show little to no difference between 32 and 64gb RAM on the Studio.

I think the base Studio will be a really nice machine. I've got one of them on order (actually, the slightly spec-bumped model with more GPU cores, otherwise stock).

I get hundreds of emails a day, with attachments. and send out just as many. One computer, never need to get emails anywhere else but right here. Im able to archive email locally, which can be critical for reference. email is kind of my filing cabinet for communication. Think my host is 10 GB on limit?

DB is fine if you manage it. Once I finish a project, I make it online only. Easy, and takes but a minute.

Benchmarks cant show working in more than one app. Life doesn't work that way.

32 GB is not enough. 64 GB isnt enough on my intel iMac... not doing anything special right now, hitting swap. In my old imac with 32 GB of ram, that would be 15-25 Gb of swap:
