YouTube videos not playing in Safari

...sometimes.

Just went to try and it worked.

But a lot of times, I will go to the YouTube at lunch and watch some videos. Well sometimes I click a video, it loads the next page, and according to the progress bar at the bottom of the black box where a video should be, it IS playing. But there is no video or audio. I can hit the play button and it turns to pause. Then hit it again to play and it does...except it doesn't.

Then I quit Safari and it works. Again. I just tried it before I posted and it worked fine. So it's not all the time. This is on a 2019 MBP running Monterrey.

They keep screwing with the interface. Are you logged in? Cookies and window preferences can change depending on what you last did. It is possible you clicked on one of their new mouse-over pop-unders that open 'picture-in-picture' but it didn't actually open the new window properly.

I'm always logged in. As far as YouTube goes anyway. At least in Safari. My normal routine is: navigate to YouTube. Hit play.

Are you running Zoom or FaceTime or TeamViewer or something of like ilk that hooks the sound/mic/video and never releases it? While this issue is underway, check the System Preferences pane and see who has the Sound claim...

Maybe? I do use Zoom and Teams a lot. But I cannot pinpoint if this occurs after that. Usually quitting Safari "fixes" it so I tended to lean towards a Safari issue. I guess I should see if it happens across multiple browsers or JUST Safari. It did it a few minutes ago and I didn't think to test it.
