I could leave it at work, and VPN into it. Work has a workflow that would work, BUT where I would have to put the Studio is in an office that anyone could walk into. If I lock it, anyone with a key to the floor can get into it. That office has never been locked (and to be honest, the door rarely closed even when it was occupied). Granted, to get to this floor requires a passkey to get here, but that still leaves a lot of people and the ability to get through during the day is not much less than it was a few years ago before they implemented the policy.

I could leave it at home, which would be more secure in the number of people that have access to it, but I would have to get a private VPN and set it up that way.

What do you guys think?

P.S. It's FAST. Like really FAST. Shockingly fast. I tried it out on a file that took me some 2-3 hours to do, in pieces because it would bring this laptop to its knees. Every time I reopen that file, it recalculates and it can take 30 minutes to do it. It took about 15 minutes, but I wasn't paying that much attention because I was doing something else on it while it churned through the calculations, which I could have never done before. I would cry if something happened to the Studio, and I rarely say that.

Sounds like its easier for you to leave it at work. Do you have a good backup system? You could lock it to your desk. The computer isn't nearly as valuable as the work you have on it. Its also small enough that you could bring it back and forth if you wanted to.

Thats an option, get a second power cable for home. Just unplug and go. Maybe a little cable clip on the back to the desk so the cables don't fall.

Its small enough, you could just hide it. Put a decorative box over it when you leave... and place a box of tissues on top of it. Or a lamp (my wife has a lamp on top of her mini). So it looks like decoration and not a computer.

And you can always lock it to the desk, it has a lock slot on the bottom... and put a box over it. =)

That sounds like a cry for a 'leave it at home' vote to me.

That would be my vote.

If basically anybody could get to it, you might never get a decent night's sleep, if left at work.

A 'Kensington' type lock and a wooden box made into a lamp to hide it might work, but still.

Maybe hide it under the desk and bring your laptop back and forth as a decoy.

If you've got good throughput at home, VPNing would be the way to go, though I don't know of a really good VPN provider.

Isn't there a DIY tunneling thing that can be done?

Regardless, I'd work towards leaving it at home.

If you keep it at work, they probably have insurance. Check on that. If so, document what you have and if bad things happen, file a police report/insurance claim. I know all you data scientists have enough money to buy a couple more to tide you over while the claim processes! Congrats on the speed of the new machine, great to hear!

Most large businesses have ten thousand or hundred thousand dollar deductibles and multi-million dollar policies. They aren't going to make a claim against that for a single $2000 computer that went missing they will just buy another computer.

They don’t own it; I do. Previous thefts have been investigated and we (the employees) were told to lock up our valuables while there. Then the University came in as security and now it takes a pass card to go up to certain floors. There are, however, clinics on the first floor and so it is considered a public space; so it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility for someone to ride up the elevator with an employee. It’s also not uncommon to have a new person, or even someone from another part of the campus, come into the building and up to see someone. I’ve seen times that security doors were propped open allowing anyone to come through.

Recently the campus police haven’t been patrolling nearly as often as before. Always before the worst time for possible theft is both the beginning of the semester and the end of the semester. The idea of taking it home at the end of the day is looking pretty good.

On our campus there's a long history of maintenance (that controls keys) not keeping track of who had keys to what. When I became a chair I had them change the pins on the locks for a couple of lab doors where things had disappeared over time. They grumbled but did it. We ended up with only the appropriate faculty members and me (along with maintenance, the cops, etc.) having keys for the labs. Might it be possible to change the lock and secure the office?

As for a private VPN in your home, it doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Mid-range and high-end Asus routers have built in support for OpenVPN which is a decent SSL VPN. If you haven't already got a high-end WiFi system at home, this is an opportunity to upgrade your home WiFi and get the SSL VPN as part of the deal.

If you have cable instead of FiOS and you're not paying extra for a business account with a static IP then you'll probably need a DDNS host as well because your IP address is subject to change.

Once it's configured on the router, you can download a profile with which to automatically configure client-software such as Tunnelblick.

Finally hiding it under a box won't work in the long run. After a few weeks, everyone will know what is there. It just takes one person talking about it and you are targeted.

Any chance of getting the school to buy one? The time savings you attest to would make it pay for itself in short order.

I can leave the peripherals as they are owned by work and just take the Studio with me. The stuff that isn’t owned by the Foundation that I would leave is very cheap or something that no one would know what it is without really having more specialized knowledge; a case in point, a TB3 (TB2?) hub from our sponsors sat in that office for at least two years with no one knowing what it was and thus unwanted until I opened my mouth and identified it. It turns out that they were looking to get at least one, perhaps more, of just that sort of thing. Unfortunately it belonged to the PI for another lab so I couldn’t just take it. All data and all work is on a very small 2 TB external drive I carry.

I think work will get at least one other Studio for my lab, but at 1-2 weeks for the requisition to be approved and then 10-12 weeks for delivery we would be well past the end of May before any results could be generated and understood. An abstract on this work is due May 26, I think. I can’t buy one and have the Foundation reimburse me because… sales tax… not-for-profit … yada yada. A note here: I am working on parallel with another person, but with a different “take” on it—different algorithms, a different gating strategy that results in the data used in these algorithms, that sort of thing—and thus the robustness of the data analysis can be checked. Theoretically they will give the same results. If not, then we can more quickly pinpoint where things went awry.
