Both were wrong. If it was a planned comment I think Rock is either going senile or suffering from dementia if he didn't know exactly what he was saying on several levels. He was trying to get by with a legendary insult to get his name back in circulation as being edgy, on a night Smith should not have stooped to respond. On his end, Smith ruined his award night.

How was Chis Rock supposed to know Will's wife had a condition? Was there a press conference or something?

I didn’t know Chris Rock made a piece exploring the importance of hair in black culture (Good Hair).
I’ll have to check that out…

Anyway, what happened last night could have happened at any playground back when I was a kid. It would be called boys being boys, and an important learning opportunity.
Or on the street when I was a teen, and it would be juvenile or delinquent behavior, depending on the strength of the slap.

Ok, nothing to see here…

To quote Chris Rock himself "I'm not saying he should have done it, but I understand!!!"

Both of them came out looking very bad.

Violence is not an appropriate reaction to anger.
Attacking a performer on stage is not okay.
"Love makes us do crazy things" is the kind of excuse a stalker or a wife abuser would use. It's not valid.
Jada Smith has her own voice, why did Will Smith have to co-opt it?

Chris Rock stepped over a line but Will Smith's reactions is all kinds of wrong.

Just because something was acceptable, "back in the day", doesn't mean it is now. "Boys being boys" is an excuse for all sorts of behavior, reprehensible and even criminal. It also leads to things like bullying and suicides/homicides.

I also think we should expect grown men to behave better than playground bullies.

Chris Rock - Rock was hired to be Chris Rock. He fulfilled his contract. He did what Chris Rock does. I'm certain he could have been a lot more caustic than what he was.

Will Smith - You can screw his wife, but don't screw WITH his wife!

A regular person would have been escorted out if they behaved like Smith. What happened here? Nothing!

I side with Chris Rock. He was a professional through the entire incident, even after the assault. Will Smith, not so much.

I'm getting sick and tired of the celebrities who think they can get away with anything they want. Throwing hands, inappropriate language, and crying about how they're "disrespected". Give me a break!! RollingEyesSmiley5

BTW, I didn't watch, but did see the assault video after the story blew up.

PeterB, agree on everything you wrote.
Your post provided the opportunity to read again what I wrote, just to confirm I didn’t condone or approved the event.
Nothing to see here (in my post) because I didn’t want to suggest to judge them as children, even though that’s how they behaved.
Both of them.

Going after someone's spouse on the basis of physical appearance is generally well over the line, as far as I'm concerned.

If Pinkett Smith were on stage and Rock was addressing/referring/speaking to her, making a joke on something other than physical appearance, that'd be ok by me.

But then taking jabs at Smith through her, wouldn't be.

So to that extent, I'd say Rock was out of line.

Be that as it may, Smith was all kinds of wrong, physical assault is way way waaaay over the line.

Publicity stunt?

That seems very unlikely to me.

I have no problem with him addressing Rock's behavior on his wife's behalf, though it might be more than she deserves.

Full disclosure, I like Rock a lot, but can't stand either Smith or Pinkett-Smith.

I never liked her, and the more famous he thought he'd become, the less I liked him.

Likely chat shows will want him on for a Sorry Not Sorry interview.

Can we agree that "roasting" at the Oscars has gone too far? That is my problem with this whole scene. No doubt Smith went too far, but perhaps this is exactly what is needed to walk back all of the joking at people's expense on a night meant to celebrate film. That's where I'm coming from. Theatres are in a desperate time and we should be encouraging folks to go there by promoting film and the film making process, not this ridiculous attempt at attention.

Well, I'm doing my part: I've been to the theater three times in the last two weeks (The Quiet Man, The Godfather, The Batman). Furthermore, I didn't slap even one person while I was there!

(Although I certainly felt like it. I'm not sure if it is humanly possible be less helpful than the kids who staff these theaters are...)

Comedy is in the eye of the beholder. Roasting seems to be part of the Oscars as a way for Hollywood to show that they don't take themselves too seriously.

Smith could have come out of this nice and shiny if he had addressed the situation in his victory speech or on social media. Them Rock would look like a bad guy. Various sources of commentary I am ready seems to skew 90% against Smith, 10% against Rock.

Retaliation doesn't need to be physical assault. What if Smith had gone up, called Rock out and demanded he apologize? Would have taken longer, not as dramatic but also not a violent attack.

I really don't care much about this. Its a tempest in a teapot. Artists tend to be hyper emotional. A little slap between a couple guys is just schoolyard stuff. I use to play in a band with a married couple. She sang, he played drums. When they had tiffs, which was often, she would start flirting with someone to piss him off. Once he stopped playing in the middle of a song and began to duke it out with some guy on the dance floor, having to finishing the night with a big knot in the middle of his forehead. He was actually a sweet guy when she wasn't pushing his buttons.

Humans, what can you say? Scrape off the thin veneer of civilization and underneath is a brute. We spend trillions of dollars on gear that allows an exgamer sitting in a trailer in the desert to accidently annihilate an innocent family on the other side of the planet, then go home, kick back, and have a beer. I worry more about that.

Retaliate, respond, address, redress, whatever notwithstanding...

I'm sure there was some of that programmed into Smith, though I'm not offering it as any mitigation whatsoever.

Apropos of nothing, I believe she's the alpha in that relationship.

And again, he originally laughed. Sincerely or not, does not matter, would possibly be getting him in serious trouble later.

I think they were roasting in a manner to provoke people and get more buzz. They got more than they bargained for, and to some degree, it's natural consequences. They may do things differently in the future. I felt really sorry for some who really looked like it was ruining their night. I do, of course, wish Will had dealt with it in a different way.

How would you have reacted if Chris Rock knocked Will out after the slap? He would have been within his legal right to punch back. Chris earned points in my book. Will not so much.
