Uh oh, did I just download a virus/hack?

On my iPh12PM, just noticed that I had a text that went to the Junk folder, coming from a number with my area code. It had no message, just an attachment as an image.

Against my better judgment and thinking it might have come from someone I knew (though why they would be texting me that late, I dunno), I saved the image and then viewed it, and it turned out to be a photo of a woman -- not sexual or anything though. (It could still legitimately be someone who texted the wrong number by mistake, but I doubt it. Edit: Googling the phone number it came from turned up nothing.)

My question is -- did I just inadvertently download a virus or hack of some kind? Should I try to do anything about it? (I already deleted the photo, but it might have been too late...) I'm not aware of iPhones having any sort of virus or malware scanning app, but maybe there's something out there that will do it?

Nobody knows for sure… that method is how iPhones get hacked by that company that alleges they only do it for governments…
But I wouldn’t do anything, unless you start noticing your phone acting up (slowdowns, heating up, etc.).

That’s what they say…
I’m not paranoid, but ethics on a hacking company get weird real quick.

OK, thanks guys.

I couldn't seem to find anything in the Apple Store that is intended to scan a phone for viruses or malware, so I sort of assume Apple has that covered.

Perhaps another dumb question, but should I let the person know (assuming the phone number is not spoofed) that they sent to the wrong person? (I don't see much harm in this, assuming the local phone number is the true sender... if it's spoofed, then of course that person didn't send the photo.)

Yep, that's what I thought too, or possibly some smishing attempt ... seeing if they can do some social engineering or something. What's weird about that though is that, as I said, it's showing up as a local number... so if I were to reply, I'd assume my reply would go to the local number, and then it'd be ineffective as a social engineering hack unless the hacker was local.

Yup ... at least, I have one. It could be because I've got some apps to do text filtering for me... REALLY useful to screen out the spam texts.
