Finding out who supplies what to whom?

Okay, here's a weird one...even for me. I've tried googling all the ways i can think of, and there may in fact be no way to find out, but here's what I'm looking for.

Let's say I find an item I'm interested in buying. I find it at retailer X. Then in the course of looking at other similar items, I find what appears to be the same item, on what seems to be the manufacturer's website, at nearly twice the price. Logic dictates that there's some more significant difference in the items, but besides specific branding for retailer X, there doesn't seem to be a difference. The owner's manual, specifications, etc are identical. It got me curious.

Is there a way to find out if in fact the manufacturer supplies said item to retailer X to sell under its own store brand?

And in anticipation of the probable question, neither of the companies in question is Walmart. smiling smiley

For electronics, you can try FCC ID and/or MAC address. System info
reports will usually show a 'Vendor ID" like 0x14e4 which happens to
be Broadcom or 0x106b which is assigned to Apple (just 1 of many).

Is there a way to find out if in fact the manufacturer supplies said item to
retailer X to sell under its own store brand?

Non-electronic items you can lookup US Patent numbers that might be
on the goods or packaging.

If it is an electrical appliance (heater, microwave, receiver, etc.) it should have a certification with a code that identifies the original manufacturer.

Thanks. It's not electronics. I don't know why I decided to be vague. It's an inflatable life vest.

Never mind. I just found out directly from the company a few minutes ago that it is the same thing, with the different branding. Guess I should have asked them days ago.

As you were. ;)

I recently ordered a "no-name" brand programmable light switch off Amazon. The Honeywell branded one was twice as much, and they looked pretty similar, so I went with the no-name brand. When it arrived, it was a Honeywell... even said so right on the switch. Saved like $15 bucks.

RZ,

Or, the one you bought might be a counterfeit version of the Honeywell model. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference without taking it apart and looking at the components. Counterfeiting is big business and the counterfeiters are getting better and better at making fake versions of products.
