Anyone installed a SATA SSD in a OWC mini stack v2?

I have an OWC Ministack v2 with 3 Firewre ports and 3 USB2 ports on the back. Currently it has a 160 GB IDE drive. I would like to swap in a SATA SSD drive with an IDE to SATA adapter, which are $10 to $15 on Amazon. I like this case because it’s always worked well with FireWire connected to a 700 MHz G3 iBook. Has anyone done this?

The adapters work fine.

Although Im sure that 160 GB drive was super slow... it still might have pushed FW close to its max 40 MB/s potential. SSD might help if you are booting, since less latency... but just using for storage is doubtful you will see any improvement. Still limited by the 40 MB/s.

We used to boot older iMacs with SSDs via USB 2, it was a zipper than the internal HDD... but mostly with booting, not much else.

I’m just looking for more storage space for the G3 iBook, whose 20 GB internal drive is full. It’s a total pain upgrading the internal hard drive (rated hard at 44 steps on ifixit.com)

Toilet seat iBook? I had to replace a screen on one many years ago. I’d say it was tedious, but not hard. Lots of screws and parts to remove. I laughed when I saw someone say they finished and had screws left over that they couldn’t figure out where they went. I was sure that wouldn’t happen to me. But it did. I reversed all the steps and still couldn’t figure it out. But everything still worked when it went back together.

There might be a GB size cap on something that old. Probably good up to a TB, I'd guess. Maybe more.

This is a white iBook. The model with a high percentage of CPU failures. I have seen mine lock up on occasion when it gets hot, but it usually runs fine in OS9 and Tiger.

Decided to get a new drive from OWC instead: 1.0TB OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro FireWire 800&400+USB3 5400RPM 8MB Cache Portable SATA 2.5" drive for $100 plus $10 for the 5v power supply.

I just need to figure out the partitions for OS9 and Tiger

How about a fast 1 TB spinner SATA? Like a Barracuda?

Contact OWC for drive limitations on the IDE controller in there first. good 512gb SSDs run about $60 shipped. (like the Samsung EVO series)

Damn, you do you, but thats *a lot* of green for a 1TB spinner.

Is there some reason you are so dead set on FW? $100 would get you a 5TB USB spinner, or $40 for 1 TB.

Theoretically, USB 2 is faster than FW, so not sure what the goal is...

700 MHz G3 iBook Has USB 1.1 and FireWire 400. It seems OWC is the probably the last supplier still selling new FireWire drives.
