LOL! So do I. Unfortunately my mom lives in Bumblefuckville, NC where cable and DSL do not reach.

Heh. Bumblefuckville, NC. Sounds lovely!

I'm not really sure but I think your best bet would be to grab an old Airport Basestation that had the modem built in. Maybe?

1980's Apple 300 baud w/ DB9 connector, to DB9/din 8 serial connector, to Keyspan din 8 serial to USB connector/converter... she'll be so pissed off, she'll move in w/ you just to get a decent high speed connection... but make her clean and do laundry, unless she's a fantastic cook... "Hey, Honey... my mom's gonna move in with us for awhile..."

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

the old iBooks had built in modems as did the g4s

If I absolutely had to use dialup, I'd be tempted to find an old airport base station with a modem in it and atleast free the iBook to go wireless.

(is Bumblefuckville near Mt Pilot?)

Embarassing myself on the Internet since 1978.

yup. the ibook has a built in modem (its one of the OWC specials) but she thinks it doesn't work. The G4 has a built in modem that i installed but she thinks that one is also busted. I think its either operator error or her flakey dialup connection or both. but she wanted to try another modem. So I'm looking. And Bumblefuckville is about an hour from...anywhere.
