For those of us old timers:

Who can remember this police series with music playing and the '49 or '50 Ford heading over the hill making that turn. The series was originally named The Lineup. When it went into syndication it was called San Francisco Beat.



This TV police series ended the show with the narration "There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them." The music playing over the credits was changed over the run of the series.



Count Basie performed the theme music for this police series.



Then there are the private detective series such as the memorable theme song.



Speaking of catchy theme songs there is this one.

"Sergeant Preston of the North-West Mounted Police, with Yukon King, swiftest and strongest lead dog, breaking the trail in the relentless pursuit of lawbreakers in the wild days of the Yukon." Anybody remember the name of his horse?

The most danger packed show on television.

By that time, I had already gotten on board with Howdy Doody running for president in 1953. This was all 'new stuff'.

Hell, I had already appeared on Okay, Mother with Dennis James on the DuMont Network by 1950.

Even though my sister beat me by a year, I was almost the first of the television babies. It was a different universe than anything that had come before.
Probably not a radical a shift as the dawning of the Age of Radio.

Even though I was the first on TV, my sisters and cousins more than made up for it by sweeping up garage-fuls of merchandise and other prizes on a series of quiz shows over a couple of decades. This all culminated with my nephew's Emmy (sitting above my sister's TV set, of course.)

I remember more of those than I care to admit, but not 1, 3, or 9. Not sure about 10. To add to the list there was also Bourbon Street Beat, which was the same formula as Surfside 6, 77 Sunset Strip, and Hawaiian Eye. But a childhood favorite was Adventures in Paradise — who could resist the thought of living like Captain Adam Troy on the schooner Tiki! I do believe my mother was a fan as well, for some reason...

I recently purchased Hawaiian Eye on DVD. It was never commercially released so the episodes were aired in various places, recorded to VHS, and now onto DVD. Suffice it to say the quality is abysmal despite the bay seller rating the quality an 8/10. About 1/3 of the DVD's had problems with playback. Thankfully the seller sent me replacements. In the end there was STILL one episode I couldn't play but I found it on youtube. The show itself is pretty good.

At the same time I bought Surfside 6, from the same reseller, and had all the same problems. I don't mind low quality if the story is good. Once I finish Chuck maybe I'll start on Surfside 6.

Sergeant Preston of the Yukon was based on a radio series--Challenge of the Yukon. The Lineup (San Francisco Beat) was originally a radio program.

In early TV history several programs either moved over to TV or were both on radio and TV.

Geeze, I remember every one of those shows, like it was yesterday.

Somewhat contradictorily, it's yesterday than I have trouble remembering.

Conspicuous by their absence are The New Breed (Leslie Nielsen), Highway Patrol (Broderick Crawford), Mr. District Attorney (Brian David), and The Detectives (Robert Taylor), among some others.

Mr. District Attorney also started as a radio show, as did The Lone Ranger, The Lineup, and Dragnet.

M Squad had probably one of the greatest themes on TV.

Guess I should have noted that these shows were on the, in my opinion--yours may differ--"second level" (that I was familiar with) from the more popular ones such as Highway Patrol--which was the CA Highway Patrol's wanting to get in on the action. They were jealous of the LAPD from Dragnet getting all the notice.
