Here's a weird one - trying to play .mov files from an old "CD-Plus"

I was ripping some old 90s, no-longer-sold CDs of onetime-Atlanta musician Josh Joplin to add to my music library, and one of his CD's was a "CD-Plus" that included an installer and a folder of .MOV files.

I was able to play the .MOV files (without installing any software) on my ancient PowerBook G4, but when I try to open them with the QuickTime Player on my modern Mac, it only plays the audio; the video is missing. Any idea what to try?

VLC is always the answer to this question [www.videolan.org]

if it's a video file, VLC can play it

Old encoding codecs like Indeo Video are being lost to time.

Apple distributed Mac versions for "classic" operating systems through OS 9, but there is no MacOS support for Mac OS X.

Convert to a modern .m4v with Handbrake. That’ll make them much more portable.

or just make sure the whole world has VLC - I prefer the latter...

VLC is a wonderful tool. I wish it had a better interface on the Mac. VLC's playback engine with a Front Row-simple front end would be marvelous.

I agree with you there Will - I hear that the next version is more polished - it could use some polish...

I would gladly shell out for VLC with a remote control/HTPC-friendly interface. It would bury Plex.

There is also Iina. It is my primary video player these days.
