I like the look of the side plug gizmos but worry about being able to charge and use USBC and HDMI devices…

If you just need a few extra ports, pass thru charging, they are all about the same, IMHO.

Nothing wrong with the side plug in models, just means you need space for it on your desk.

I don't see a need to pay a premium, hundreds to choose from. One we have is great, $27.

My gripe with most if not all of these 'travel' type docks it the lack of a second or third USB-C port.

Here's one that's dual USB-C, supports 10Gbps, dual Type A, but lacks HDMI, Ethernet, and card slots.

I'll probably add this one to the pile.

When I get bored, I look for my ideal 'portable' dock:

10Gbps
3 USB-C ports
1 USB-Type A port
2 Card slots, SD/mSD

Ethernet maybe, HDMI, sure, if it's there why not.

I've decided side-plug docks aren't for me.

It's a small but deal breaking nit — the lines of those devices never match my MBA and that just bugs me.

And as my 'Book spends a lot of my time in my lap, the docks have been brushed but not knocked or bent, but it's another strike for me.

Depends on what you want for ports. I use a monitor with built in dock functionality.
