Son's friend took his life at 21
Posted by: lost in space
Date: April 12, 2022 03:53PM
We got word this morning that a friend of our son took his life last night. They first knew each other in 3rd grade. Matthew was 21, suffering from anxiety, Crohn's disease and intense headaches, getting treatment on the other side of the state with limited success. He was a sweet kid, but was having a hard time. Our hearts are broken. We'll be telling our son after work. My wife is with the family now.

R.I.P.

Such a tragedy for someone not even beginning to start life. My condolences.

My condolences. You may want to seek professional advice for your son.

So sorry for your loss ... points out how urgent the mental health issues have become, especially in the last two years.

Due to the poison of social media it has never been harder to be a child or a young man than it is now.

Damn. So sorry to hear this, and so sorry for your loss. I went to funerals with my children for the four children who took their lives from their HS Class. It was and is heartbreaking.

Just because you ask for help from a medical provider absolutely doesn't mean you will get it. I'm proof of that.

Hell, sometimes even family doesn't give a @#$%&.

I agree 100%, though I don't know that this played any part in Matthew's suicide.

My condolences to you, your family, and to Matthew's family.

His mom, even in this trying time, kept the news off social media because she wanted his friends to learn about it from people, not Facebook. What strength.

Thank you all for the comforting words.

My condolences. My son's friend made a the same mistake at the same age.

He is still dealing with it.

Looking back, I recall have a couple of friends die by thier own hand. Some purposefully, some accidentally (drug overdose).

Your son will be fine. It could be way worse.

I got an early morning call to go to my brother's work and identify his body when he hung himself. You get over it. Carrying the grief around serves no purpose.

Sorry for your loss. Was you brother in his early 20s?

I am glad to hear that you have reached a state of equilibrium in regard to this tragedy. It is not an easy thing. Please remember, though, that everyone has their own way of processing such an experience, and it is important to give them the space necessary to do so.

My sense is that you can tamp that stuff down for decades but when you get older it's not as tamped down as you thought. Of course, Spock would differ.
