HDMI ARC is a two way signal.
So anything going to the receiver can be routed to the TV.
Anything going to the TV can be routed to receiver.

Doesn't the TV have a digital audio output? If so, why not use that?

My receiver is old enough to not have HDMI inputs. It has multiple Optical audio inputs though. I connected all my devices to my TV via HDMI. Then the TV audio outputs via optical to the receiver. This way, I can use TV audio easily and only use receiver audio when I want. Don't need to use the receiver to switch inputs.
