What do you do when a cop won’t get off your tail?

Slow way down? Drive just under the speed limit and stay in your lane the best you can? Pull over and call his bluff?

I’ve had it happen several times in my life and it’s unnerving. I never have alcohol or guns or drugs in my car and my insurance papers are always supposed to be in there.

Pull over and make a cell phone call.

I hate this, especially during chain controls in snow. Highway 89 leads to the mountain formerly known as Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. During chain controls, the speed limit is supposed to be 25mph. Due to powder fever, most people want to drive it at 40-50mph.

I try to keep it at 28 or so just in case a B&W pulls in behind me. It's super nerve wrecking having the cop and 100 cars lined up behind. Often on those snowy day there is no place to pull over and make a phone call.

Call his bluff?!

Just keep driving, obeying the rules of the road.

Or just gas it.

When you finally are stopped, demand to know why he isn’t catching criminals instead of harassing you.

Tell him you know your rights and be sure to make some cracks about donuts.

They love that.

Happy to help.

You’re welcome.

I've had a few times when this happened to me. Once I got pulled over for having an expired license tag (three days expired). I just assume some stupid luck is about to happen to me so I always pull into a parking lot, sit for a moment, and resume my journey. I don't need that kind of anxiety added to the pile of anxiety I'm already dealing with.

Also, don't forget to toss in a "Do you know who I am?!!??" - but it MUST be spoken loudly, and preferably while angrily pointing an index finger at the police officer repeatedly.

I’ve had a highway patrol follow me for 25 miles on an interstate in South Dakota. I was in a truck and obeyed the speed limit and stayed in my lane. It was in the middle of the night and the cop was looking for a couple of vehicles stopped in an official vehicle-only turnaround in the median which I came upon about five miles after the cop flipped.

I’m more anxious when I’ve been slightly speeding in my four wheeler and one decides to follow me. Again, I stay at the speed limit and stay in my lane. Once they’ve run my plates and lost interest they usually turn around or exit.

There was an alcoholic prominent lawyer in my town who had a wreck out in the country while drunk. He ran into the woods and walked a few hundred yards and walked back to the highway and caught a ride home from a friend who was passing by. He got in bed and called his doctor friend who came over and wouldn’t let the cops in because the lawyer had a “serious medical condition.” He never had his alcohol numbers checked, had his insurance agent friend handle the wreck details, and his uncle, the judge, handled the rest. He came out spotless, although he became the town joke after a similar incident happened a few weeks later.

These incidents are always in the woods, usually at least fifteen or so miles from anywhere.

Don't forget the Gestapo comparison. That always goes over well.

Joking aside, my fear is getting pulled over and being told to keep my hands visible. That has happened before but I was able to yell about missing one, nowadays I'm not sure I would be believed.

I was once pulling an empty boat trailer with my VW Bug. I had just bought the trailer and was going the speed limit on a two lane curvey road. A Highway Patrolman was tailgaiting me and flashing his headlights. After a few minutes I pulled over when I finally came to a safe spot.

Another time a Highway Patrol car was tailgating me in the city. I was actually going 5 mph over the speed limit. I stayed in my lane and he finally turned on his red lights - I pulled over and he passed me.

It seems to me Police should be driving the speed limit unless they have their flashing red lights on. I would really like to know what the law says about this.

Generally, must have lights on if more than 10 over. Seattle police are always speeding without lights and sirens, rolling through stops, talking on cell phones. Everything us mortals get tickets for.

I assume the officer has just gotten a call about a vehicle and/or person that was just involved in an officer-down shooting AND my vehicle and/or I match that description. My assumption includes thinking the officer(s) are (justifiably) very nervous.

I try to do whatever seems appropriate to defuse the situation.

I'm a white guy that doesn't have a record - I have no fear. I once honked at a pair of cop cars that were blocking traffic - stopped in the middle of the road - one going one way, one going the other. They were having a nice chat. I was late and impatient... HONK!!!! They moved a moment later... My passenger looked at me like I was crazy...

I’ve only been pulled over a couple of times, but these days I would keep both hands on the top of the wheel if the officer walked up to my car.

A man is driving home from the pub and gets pulled over by a police officer.

The office says: “Good evening sir, do you know why I pulled you over?”

The man replies: “I’m guessing you think I was drunk driving.”

The officer informs the man that he is correct and tells him: “Tell you what; my shift is ending soon so if you can spell the alphabet backwards, I’ll let you go without any fuss.”

In a clear and calm voice the man quickly says: “ZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA.”

Impressed by the quick answer, the officer now believes that the man is clean and states: “Wow, I couldn’t do that sober.”

The man replies with a shrug: “Yeah, me neither.”

Late one night a man is driving down the road, going way faster than the speed limit. A cop notices how fast he is going and pulls him over, saying to him: “Are you aware of how fast you were going?”

The man replies, “Yes I am. I’m trying to escape a robbery I got involved in.” The cop gives him a skeptical look and says, “Were you the one being robbed?”

The man casually replies, “No, I committed the robbery.” The cop looks shocked that the man admitted this. “So you’re telling me you were speeding … and committed a robbery?”

“Yes,” the man calmly says. “I have the loot in the back.” The cop begins to get angry. “Sir, I’m afraid you have to come with me.” The cop reaches in the window to subdue the man. “Don’t do that!” the man yells fearfully. “I’m scared you will find the gun in my glove compartment!” The cop pulls his hand out. “Wait here,” he says.

The cop calls for backup. Soon cops, cars, and helicopters are flooding the area. The man is cuffed quickly and taken towards a car. However, before he gets in, a cop walks up to him and says, while gesturing to the cop that pulled him over, “Sir, this officer informed us that you had committed a robbery, had stolen loot in the trunk of your car, and had a loaded gun in your glove compartment. However, we found none of these things in your car.”

The man replies, “Yeah, and I bet that liar said I was speeding too!”

There was a middle aged guy who bought a brand new Mercedes convertible SLK. He took off down the road, flooring it up to 80 mph and enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left on his head. 'This is great,' he thought and floored it some more.

He looked in his rear view mirror and there was a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blasting. 'I can get away from him with no problem' thought the man and he floored it some more and flew down the road at over 100 mph.

Then he thought, 'What am I doing? I'm too old for this kind of thing' and pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the State Trooper to catch up with him.

The Trooper pulled in behind the Mercedes and walked up to the man.

'Sir,' he said, looking at his watch. 'My shift ends in 30 minutes and today is Friday the 13th. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding; that I've never heard before, I'll let you go.'

The man looked back at the Trooper and said, 'Last week my wife ran off with a State Trooper, and I thought you were bringing her back.'

The State Trooper said, 'Have a nice day.'

I’ve found that telling the cop that I pay their salary always works well.

Also, don't forget to toss in a "Do you know who I am?!!??" - but it MUST be spoken loudly, and preferably while angrily pointing an index finger at the police officer repeatedly.

Fun fact: Don’t do the opposite and pace a cop, either. Doing so isn’t “clearing the way” for you. They effectively get to break the law with or without flashing lights.

True story - a Friday night in 1984, between Waldo and Stark, Florida (two of the most notorious speed traps in the nation at the time). I had just covered a high school football game for the Florida Times-Union and was heading home to Gainesville. I'm doing about 70, which is really stupid in that area. Blue lights come on and FHP pulls me over.

Trooper - This is a 50mph speed limit, why are you going so fast

Me (without thinking or missing a beat) - My father had a heart attack AND I'm on my way home.

Trooper - ok, slow down, drive carefully, your family doesn't need any further worries.

I did not lie - my father did have a heart attack two years earlier AND I was on my way home. I never claimed the two events were related in any way, the trooper just made that assumption. The use of the word AND was the key.

End result was no ticket and I got to my house in Gainesville. I called my dad the next day at his home in Bradenton.
