Say Goodbye to Incandescent Light Bulbs

just like wind turbines.

you know we're gonna hear it, if we haven't already.

" In December 2019, Axios reported that Trump blocked Bush-era legislation that would have encouraged U.S. consumers to purchase LED light bulbs. That move would have gone into effect in 2020."

There's already been a ton of encouragement from my local power company in the form of super affordable LED bulbs through retailers like Costco.

Light bulb thread. Let's just get some things out of the way:

Even if they die early, they still save you money. 1/10th the energy usage. ONE TENTH. Pro-tip: Haunt the "Clearance" sections at WalMart or HomeDepot for old stock deals. LEDs come in all temps, if you care about such things. One LED outlasts many incandescents, if landfills bother you.

I love LEDs, but I still like incandescents for my nightstand lamp to warm a cold corner of the bedroom on winter nights.

Yup - just this past weekend, I acquired and installed some string lights for the outdoor patio (48' with 24 bulbs at 1 watt each). From more than a few feet away, you'd never know they're LEDs and not actual Edison-style incandescents. Looking at replacement bulbs, they're equivalent to 11 watt S14s; so 24 vs 264 watts.

Outside of edge cases where I wanted the waste heat from an incandescent, rather than actually the light, I haven't installed an incandescent bulb in more than a decade.

Don't forget the energy savings of not having to have AC counteract all that waste heat!

Guess I better order a couple more incandescent Rough Service bulbs for the well house. They're the only type that will last more than one season. We have to turn one on during the coldest weather periods. This place has to have a running well, just spent $3000 on a new pump, foot valve, piping and pressure tank. It's only a 2" well that's about 85 years old and it feeds two houses and the farm, which has two automatic Ritchie water fountains for the cattle herd.

When they made the original mandate, CFLs were all the rage. I HATE CFL bulbs. We actually started stocking up on incandescent bulbs. Then LED bulbs started pushing out CFL. Our current house has had all halogen and incandescent bulbs switched to LED. Most of the fluorescent tubes have also been switched to LED.

I don't think an Easy Bake Oven will perform quite the same with an LED bulb.

I have standard household size LED bulbs in my fridges and freezers where there was enough room for the bulbs to fit. In tighter spaces I have more compact LED appliance bulbs.

No experience in ovens, but the cold didn't impact my fridge/freezer usage. Seems like a lot of plastic in the bulbs and would be concerned about oven use and would look for special appliance bulbs.

I don't see an LED suitable for a conventional oven at Amazon, so I would assume incandescent will have to be available for those. There are cold-rated LEDs for refrigerators. Anyway, it's not the one oven light you use a total of 90 seconds a year that's the problem.

One place I liked incandescent is closets, because the frequent on-off kills LEDs early, and closet bulbs are not on for more than a minute at a time anyway. But, I can deal.

I thought that was also the case for incandescent, the heat up and cool down cycles wear out the filament, but I could be mistaken!

It's hard on any bulb. While my earlier post did assert "LEDs still cheaper if they fail early," at a certain point, the life/cost/energy/recycling advantage is lost if an LED fails exceptionally quickly.

My understanding is that heat will kill an LED, so putting it in an oven isn’t good for it.

As my eyes age, I'm thankful that LEDs' cooler operating temperatures allow use of brighter lights in fixtures that had been limited to dimmer incandescent bulbs because of the heat they generated.

This is exactly why Boeing went to LED on the 787. For every watt of light, you need one watt of A/C to counteract it. On the carbon fiber tube body of the 787, you don't even shed through the aluminum skin. I think they still have 14,400 watts of LEDs on board. My buddy was on the team doing the thermal work for the cabin lighting.

In many places, I went from 60 w bulbs to "75 w" bright white CFL or LED. Huge difference

There's an amazing variety of styles of LED bulbs now that mimic old style incandescents if that's what you're into. That wasn't possible with CFLs.

The only downside to LEDs is it requires internal electronics to make them work, which is almost always the point of failure when LEDs go bad. I have seen a fair number of LED bulbs recently that annoyingly flash on and off, or strobe--after presumably something in those electronics have failed.

I'm gonna try one in the EZ bake tonite to bake a pie.

We have a couple LEDs in the freezer that are tiny, physically, but the same size as the OEMs were. No complaints, a year old or so.

The oven has itty halogens. Don't think I'd mess with them.

Last year our pals at PSEG did an energy audit here.
Gave us a box of 10 Earthbulb 9.5w/2700k. Much nicer light than the Eddies they replaced.
Worth every bit of the $4-$6000 we pay every year in household energy costs.

We'd already done the kitchen hi-hats 5 or 7 years ago. Also very nice.
We have 2 torchiere CFLs left. I almost wish they'd fail.

Just bought a Circline 27w LED for the fan bulb in the office.
Way nicer than the fluor it replaced.

When bulbs fail, I replace with LED.

I don't think there is a solution for an oven bulb except incandescent. Anything else can't take the heat.

I've never had a problem with CFL's. We've got some that are at least 15 years old and still going. I'm not replacing them until they go out. I have a stack LED's that Duke Energy sent us through the mail. We're putting them in as the CFL's go out which is very rare. Duke Energy has a very good discount on lots of bulbs for their customers, they're free bulb program has expired.

We have daylight CFL's over the mirror in main bathroom, I like a lot of light for shaving even though I could probably do it in the dark.

There's probably a couple incandescents still in some closets but they are on for maybe 5 minutes a week.

Fridge and Freezer: Yes!

Oven: No. How long do you keep the oven light on anyway, a few minutes here and there? that is not an issue.

I thought about this, but even when the incandescents are no longer sold, I'll bet that halogens might be -- since there are some types of equipment that MUST use halogens -- and they put off even more heat than do incandescents in many cases.

Well, you'll just need to replace it with an LED of equal wattage, heat is heat after all. It just might be too bright to look at though!

In my RV’s wet bay, I have a drop light with a 100W incandescent bulb. It puts out enough heat to keep said bay above overnight freezing temps. Maybe I should stock up on some of the “old” tech bulbs.

Or just get a low output heater, and then not have to worry about the bulb breaking.
