Can’t find a mattress without memory foam anywhere.

I want a double-sided old-school inner-spring mattress for around $600 that don’t expand out of a box that you buy from a store and try it out and carry it home in a pickup. Nobody has them.

I was able to do just that at a nearby store a few years ago - except for the pickup truck part.... They closed just a few weeks later...

Chains may be a lost cause in this regard, but here we still have local companies making good mattresses.

Have you tried BedQuarters in NY? Depending on where you live, you might need some extra gas in the pickup.

I’m in Arkansas. There’s a Mattress Firm 1.5 hours away. They have one-sided inner springs without memory foam (so he says; I bet something falls through.)

Out of curiosity, have you tried bed in a box?

Returns are hassle free, if that's something you are concerned with.

kids are on wayfair house brand, medium, no pillowtop full size... about $400. We had to return... no issues. easy peasy. they just came and got it.

And tons of places have 180 day try outs... you didn't mention size, so cant comment on the $600 part... maybe a little more for Cal king? or less for queen...

I, too, like the "regular" mattresses with springs, although I've bought my kids the expandable foam things from Costco over the last few years. The place that made the current king mattress for is went OOB right after. But local shops still do exist because shipping a mattress is still a deal killer over long distances.

There are like a gazillion “mattress outlet” stores near us. We bought an extra firm (No memory foam) king for $700 last year. Forget the brand, I want to say Sealy.

What about Costco / Sams? They advertise regular mattresses in their sales flyers on occasion.

I couldn’t find one at Sam’s. Costco is too far.

most bed in a box are "hybrid" -- part foam, part spring.

We buy plain foam (non-memory) at at a local foamstore. We can sample different hardnesses and thicknesses. Add a non-memory foam thin mattress cover and you’re in business. $500 for a queen.

Is that the one in Michigan?

Which ones would be like that? Most I am familiar with are all foam, open cell foam at that. It make it easy to compress out most of the air and significantly reduce the size of the container it gets shipped in.

It takes a little tweaking of search results to find local manufacturers/retailers. Supposedly IKEA has something called Hesstun, 90 day exchange. At least one of the companies in this review has springs in a mattress-in-a-box.
https: //www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-innerspring-mattress/

pocket spring
inner spring
dual sided

maybe include several minus sign term until you get the results you want, -euro, -quilt, -memory, -"comfort top", -"memory top".

Do hotel and motels have a certain firmness they shoot for to satisfy the typical person, or do they have a hodge-lodge of different firmnesses?

In our experience, it seems like in the last several years they're generally more firm.

We bought this one off Amazon back in February of 2018. At the time it was just under $300 with some promotion they had going. Not memory foam, but latex. Very firm, so we ended up using a topper with it. It has coil springs under the latex and came in a box that we had to open and let 'relax' before use.

That said, a little over a year ago I did have to take advantage of their warranty, as my wife was having some back issues that we (perhaps incorrectly) attributed to the mattress. But after a relatively painless email exchange which included a few pictures, they sent us a brand new replacement, which we are still using to this day.

like this, mattress in a box: [www.wayfair.com]

Dennis specific wants might be tuff to fill, nearly everything is pillow top these days... or what he might want wont cost $600 unless you go to "joes mattress outlet".

I’m leaning hard toward the foam setup that lost in space mentioned, but I’ll get it here:

Full size X 6”

I might like a tufted top if they make them.

jdc,

I was going to say it's tough to to fill because even the typical innerspring mattress has a certain amount of foam in one of its layers. I'm not even talking about a hybrid model. A plain ol' innerspring. That he wants a model he can flip over makes finding one even more difficult because that style of mattress hasn't been commonly available for many years.

I can accept foam internally. I just can’t deal with laying on memory foam.
