I do, I don't know why though. I do know that if I toss it, that I'll regret doing so.

Son came across an old tape of the grandson and attempted to run an old VCR through one of the modern hookups - no luck.

yes, 3. One is a S-VHS editing deck feeding through a Sony TRV-900 miniDV cam to MacPro tower for digitizing video. has a TBC circuit, and manual tracking. It is a beast.

I still have all the equipment for transferring VHS to digital either as a computer file or onto a DVD. Every few months someone I know will come across an old VHS tape of family and want to keep it on something more modern. They are always exceedingly grateful that I can do it for them.

Don’t wait too long - those tapes have a finite lifetime. Once they start flaking, it’s over.

I recommend getting them serviced, before the last people who know how retire. The lubricants used in the mechanical parts will need to be replaced by now.

I think I have three of them in the Technology Museum Junk Pile in the basement. And a ton of VHS Tapes. I should probably do something with them before my kids have to put them in the dumpster when I'm gone (*)/

(*) Hopefully many years hence. Dying was painful, no desire to do it again.

I haven't had a VCR in around 20 years.

I don't own a dedicated DVD/Blu-ray, rather, I have a PS3 which functions as a good DVD/Blu-ray on rare occasion.

I have three, actually, for digitizing my old VHS collection; there are times when a tape just doesn't agree with a player and you have to switch to a different brand. The best is a Panasonic Blu-ray/VCP I picked up in a fire sale (and was glad I did, thanks to the high quality internal digitizer and HDMI output they sell for considerably more than the very high original retail price now), and two more from estate sales. Still slowly working my way through several boxes of tapes.

One for digitizing, though the digitizing is something I never seem to get around to doing.

agree smiley Same here; although all the old home videos were long ago digitized, and I can't remember the last time I actually played any of the VHS tapes that are moldering away in storage cabinets.

No. Also no DVD/Blu-Ray player. Have some old Macs with Superdrives, though. They might still work. The DVD/Blu-reader in my PC seems to have gone belly-up and we actually stopped Netflix DVDs last year because of this (and we ran out of things to watch).

Everything's on a file/video server which has now followed 23 years of gradual migrations.

assuming you meant optical drive... none here. Ok, I have an iLamp. Hasnt been on in years.

We also do not own any optical media. CDs, DVDs nope. Never had blue ray. some movies of the kids as babies on a drive somewhere... but wasn't really a big thing for us... so no giant library of movies either.

I have two JVC Super VHS decks, and a standalone DVD recorder. I digitized almost all of my VHS tapes about 5 years ago. Then I did the 8mm tapes, and finally the miniDV tapes. The only thing left are some VHS tapes where I recorded some audio to them.

I also have about 100 cassette tapes of live material that i need to transfer. My sister gave me a bunch of her cassettes and asked me to digitize them... I ended up finding almost all of them on Usenet. The only ones I didn't were meditation tapes she has. I haven't gotten around to doing them yet.

I have a VCR sitting on a shelf down in the basement. I digitized everything we cared for and we've unloaded all of our VHS tapes years ago. I suppose I should donate the VCR but I don't, "just in case."

Panasonic AG1980. Great machine with built-in TBC, but with dying capacitors. Every time I use it, it loses a function. I now have to take audio from its headphone jack. There are hundreds of capacitors - impractical to recap.

JVC digital VHS recorder. Quite frankly, the Panasonic’s picture is better.

I have converted my tapes to H264 files, so rarely use these machines anymore. I’ve learned, though, never get rid of your source material. Digital storage is too fallible.

I need to buy a VCR DVD combo to transfer our VHS tapes. Someday.

Nota bene: there are many "VCR DVD combo" units available, but many have play-only DVD internals; not capable of burning DVDs.

- With DVD players only: $250 and up

- With DVD record capability: $600 and up

You may luck onto some new old stock units, but in the majority of cases they will be used or refurbished VCR players. The last company making VCR transports discontinued production several years ago, almost 6 if the date in the Wikipedia article is correct.

I remember there being a big news story when that happened.

As I recall, some of the companies in their supply chain were discontinuing manufacture of components needed in assembling the tape transports. So they built out based on their remaining stock of parts, and that was it. There was still a market for them.

Personally I ended up being assigned evaluation of the VCRs we had left at the library for which ones were functional. Also ended up needing to repair and adjust a few in the years afterwards. They still had VHS tapes that were used for instructional purposes. A couple others in or connected to my department were working on getting the most used ones transferred to digital copies, though a few tapes died before they could get to them. Some titles never got DVD versions released. One that died was a BBC documentary from the 1980s, another was a 5 tape set of a series released by TBS. At least they found a new set available for sale of the TBS series.
