My 4.1(firmware upgraded to 5.1) twin 4 core MacPro with 42 Gb RAM had frozen. Hard started, logged in and it ran for a couple of minutes then froze again. Tried again, this time logged into my vanilla Troubleshoot account, same result. Unplugged all USB devices other than keyboard and mouse and booted in safe mode, same again, froze after just over two minutes. Reset PRAM, no change.This was in OSX 10.12 Sierra on a PCI mounted SSD. I have multiple other OS’s on multiple HDD’s, tried them all including my old favorite 10.6 Snow Leopard, all froze. It won’t run long enough to run Disk Utility or Rember.

So I’m thinking this might be a hardware rather than software problem and I should start pulling the RAM and either replace it with some old 1 or 4 GB chips or ….. unless someone has a better idea?

When you are in there with the thermal paste at hand, do your video card heat sink as well. My old paste really DID look like dried and cracked toothpaste. Video card suddenly worked again.

One of my MDDs started doing that, locking up hard after 15-20 minutes of use. In the process of futzing with various solutions, I discovered that the thermal paste looked like Death Valley. Ran fine with fresh Arctic Silver.

Yup. Had to buy specific tools to replace my cpus on my 4,1.

If you can get it to run long enough to install a temperature monitoring utility do that. But I think you should probably start with your first troubleshooting idea and start pulling and swapping RAM.
