More home routers should provide an open wifi network

...in addition to the private, password protected network for the network owner. I have it configured on my Unifi setup. More people should be equally generous.

Ok... but for what purpose? My neighbors to the East, West and South have wifi, and the neighbors to the North are cows...

Or would this be for a specific place? Like if I lived in a 1000 unit apartment building?

I wouldn't. There have been cases where someone else transmitted pron via an open wifi network, and the owner of the wifi got in big trouble.

Two issues I've seen with this:
1. People have been held liable for criminal activity conducted via their internet connection
2. The bandwidth gets saturated pretty quickly and, unless you are able to throttle it, there's nothing left for you

For a while a non-profit I help out with had an open wifi network. They needed it to be open, but a neighbor was leeching heavily. The router wasn't very sophisticated, but I was able to set it so the internet was turned off during a couple days of the week when they weren't there. That got rid of the leech.

Agreed. What would be the point.

That said, in our area, if you get Comcast/Xfinity Xfi router set up, you're doing this very thing, at least for other Xfinity subscribers. They charge you $25/mo for it, but you get unlimited data if you have it. (No thanks.)

My contract with Charter says I have to have a separate account $$ for each device in my home, not that it was ever enforced.

A separate "guest network"/SSID with a different password and only Internet access? Sure. That lets you give Internet access to guests/known people without having the ability to access other devices (printers, NAS devices, etc.) on the local network.

An "open" network? Nope, not at a residence. Probably not even at a commercial business without some controls (connection time length, content controls, etc). For the reasons outlined above...I used to work with a retailer who regularly had store ISP connections shut down due to DMCA complaints when someone would park outside their building and start downloading copyrighted material.

Wasn't there a thread here in the last week or so about controlling kids' Internet access? Want to be the enabler for the teen down the street who is trying to get around their parents' controls?

I live next door to a school.
Since I also work at a school, I know what a crap-ton of bad mojo can come down on one, if one is responsible for "little jonny" or "little janey" accessing the internet and showing all their friends "two girls, one cup", or "Mia Khalifa's best @#$%&".

My WiFi has ONE password, and no one I don't know well gets it.

Just make sure you turn it off at night, or your neighbor's 14 year old daughter will be using it.

A big difference is that the Comcast routers are not open wifi network connections. Users of them need an active account with Comcast to make a connection, and any traffic connected with that can be linked back to an account.

second article was UK based, fwiw.

And they seem focused on "public" networks, as opposed to a shared private one?

Reminds me of the "old days" of routers that came from the factory with no security.

You could connect and use the default admin password and have total control of the router.
