May 13, 1991: Apple releases Mac OS 7, more commonly known as System 7. The longest-lasting of Apple’s classic Mac operating systems, it will remain current until System 8 replaces it in 1997.

System 7 brought the biggest Mac OS shakeup since the operating system first shipped with the original Mac in 1984. The new version was whip-fast, beautiful to look at, and boasted a bevy of innovative features.

System 7’s new features
One big new feature was true full-time multitasking, letting multiple applications run at the same time. This meant that, for the first time, you could carry out background processing. It allowed Mac users to perform a processing-heavy task in one app while using another. That may sound (and is!) normal today, but it was a revolution in 1991.

I didn't much like OS 7, I did like OS 6.0.8 and eventually came OS 8.6 and again fell in like.

I didn't like OS7 either. It was just far too slow on a Mac Plus with external hard drive, and not compatible with my own Mac Plus, which did not have a hard drive. I used 6.0.8 for another 4 years, until finally replacing my 1986 Mac Plus.

I loved System 7. It was my second favorite "classic" with OS 8.6 being my favorite.

Not then, at least I don't think so. I remember going to the campus computer store with a box of blank floppies to get a copy of System 7 made when it came out. Store was making sets for people.

It was very dicey until about 7.5 IIRC.

“ It was very dicey until about 7.5 IIRC “

7.5.3, 7.5.5, and 7.6 were decent, but 8.1 was a big improvement.

6.0.8 presented a learning curve I was reluctant to give up.

It was certainly a better OS than Windows 3, which really wasn't an OS...

I think my IIci came with 6.08 and discs for 7.
All the OSs were fine for me except a number of incantations of OSX.

True. 8.6 was about the apex of the original Mac OS.

True. 8.6 was about the apex of the original Mac OS.

I started Maccing the 7.5.3 days with a PB5300cs and all 7.5.x were uninspiring on that model but 7.6 and 7.6.1 were very good. Stable and notably faster on that slow laptop.

8.1 was good but 8.6 was the best. 9.x added the screen calibration feature which made my by-then PC5300ce screen look great (finally) and its profiles were back-compatible with 8.6 so I calibrated the screen in 9.1, saved that to a Zip (!) and reinstalled 8.6 and imported.

All the speed and stability and no bloat and Speed Doubler of 8.6 with the excellent screen correction of 9.1.

Still installed there today, last checked about 4 years ago...

7.1.2 was my first MacOS, I loved it. A big step up from Windoze 3.11!

Agree that 8.6 was the Apex of Classic MacOS.
