The world is changing and I don't like it [rant]

I don't think there's anything I can do about any of this. There's no sense in worrying or getting down about it. It seems like whatever I do, life is harder because of poor decisions made by other people.

Some of it is little stuff. For example, I went to buy some 24" x 24" pavers to extend a section in my yard, and that size is nowhere to be found. I can buy them by the pallet, but they're $$$ and I don't need that many. Fine, I'll shop around. Found some for $20ea. Oy. Went to 20"x20" at $6ea. Guess that works. But then I go to pick them up and quite a few of them were cracking and even splitting in half as I picked them up.

Or other things like I need a 19mm socket and both places I drove to (with gas now going over $6/gal and apparently we're prepping for $10/gal) no longer sell individual sockets or wrenches. Sets only. And they're all behind lock and key. So if I want a 15mm box wrench locally, I have to buy a whole set. Or $10 from Amazon. Theft is so rampant the stores don't want any little things that are easy to steal. We had one good local hardware store and they shut down because of the covid restrictions.

Meh.

The list goes on, but I should really find something else to do. Guess I'll go change the oil in the car... the oil that took me weeks to find because of supply chain issues, and then took weeks for it to ship even though it was in stock when I ordered. Not sure why it didn't ship. I contacted them two weeks after ordering it only for them to respond tell me "there's no reason it shouldn't have shipped already." Yeah, great, so why hasn't it? A week later it ships. And then the carrier keeps being delayed in delivering it.

At least it's sunny out.

There is a flea market down the road here. I would look there if I needed to pick up a single socket. Only open on the weekend though.

BIG business is purposely killing off the "mom & pop" type businesses. Add in the fact that Big Business's ONLY concern is to maximize profits, NOT to serve the clients or communities where they operate. Then they wonder why their Big Businesses are NOT performing as they expected them to as they cut quality and service. old fogey smiley

There must be a special place where 10mm sockets go to hide. If we ever find that place there will BILLIONS of 10mm sockets. After that they will find another special hiding place.

Does your dryer feel *heavy* to you? Is the lint trap always too full? You may have unwittingly acquired a "sock hole"
which warps the space-time continuum to materially displace socks and convert them to "sockonium" and thus begin the inevitable transmutation series that results in (1) 10mm sockettes, or (2) full conversion to "unobtanium", which explains both sock and socket shortages, and the economic driving force for the invasion of the moon Pandora as documented in the "Avatar" series of films...

Well that oil change turned into the worst ever. I discovered a new fitting that requires a punch and compressed air.

I can normally do an oil change in an hour. This one took five.

I've driven Volvos for years. One of the less noticed features of those old Volvos was that with a 10mm socket and 10mm open end wrench you could disassemble and then reassemble almost the entire car - so I had and still have and unending supply of 10mm tools.

Oy. I typed this out earlier, but didn't post it...

Somehow I keep track of my 10mm socket.

So I thought I could do this oil change on my own (I've been doing them for a long time, but new car.) Turns out I can't use a 19mm box end wrench on it because it's recessed. I'm glad I figured that out before I removed the 18mm bolt. For whatever reason, the kit I bought with OEM parts came with a 19mm head instead of an 18mm. So while I can get the socket on to remove the bolt and drain it, I wouldn't have been able to get the new drain plug installed. If they used standard crush washers, I'd just replace the washer. But, no.

Took me over an hour to get the belly pan off. My ramps aren't wide enough so I am trying to do it without lifting the vehicle.

I should have sad fastener. It's a plastic one that has a center that has to be punched out. Once it's punched, the center moves into the frame. So you have to use compressed air to blow through the frame and force it out an opening on the other side. If you don't get that piece, you can't get the fastener to work right again.

“Sad Fastener” would be a cool name for a band.
