She mentioned a bath of diluted Clorox but google was not keen on that. I tried lots of things when I had it last and NOTHING worked but calamine lotion.

yes. I'm on a few outdoors forums, and this is a common treatment. The nasty component of the three poison plants, oak/ivy/sumac is an oily compound. standard soap is pretty ineffective.

A drug store will have "special" soap bars but, if I remember correectly, it should be used ASAP after exposure.

True in our experience. Mom once tried to 'push' the treatment back to an hour and 10 minutes later and, well, she never made that mistake again. The strong positive feedback loop of poison ivy exposure makes for quick and unambiguous conclusions.

Zanfel. It's expensive and really only works if you use it very soon after being exposed, but it does work under those conditions.

After that, go to the doc for a cortisone shot.

If you use isopropyl or hand sanitizer right after exposure, you should prevent a reaction. We hike with those items for that purpose. I’m not sure if it’s too late for her, but I’m guessing so!

Never heard of that--not that I'm an outdoorsman who would know.

So the alcohol breaks down the bad stuff?

it is an oil based compound, so it sure makes sense. And from an outdoors standpoint, hand sanitizer makes a nifty fire starter, or camp stove primer.

I have had quite bit of problems with poison ivy, once actually having to be treated for it in an NYC hospital in my 20s. Over the years I found this stuff to work best:

Prednisone. I re-filled my script the last time and put the bottle in my toolbox.

She washed with Dawn, then drove about 30 minutes to get fels napftha. She works in a clinic so if it gets bad she can easily get a steroid shot.

So much here depends on what point you are at...

Just exposed - TecNu soap does a good job of removing all oil from skin and making further spread less likely. Fels Naptha has done well for me on clothes but not skin.

Post exposure already have the rash - Hydrocortisone cream best...calamine lotion second best. I usually have prednisone around for Crohn's and a quick low dose cycle of that can also knock back Poison Oak itch.

Alcohol is the universal cure. In the summer months, I prefer gin and tonic, but a good bourbon or vodka works just as well.

Yes, alcohol solves the oils. Any soap will also work - supposedly it’s the friction that really helps. I also like hand sanitizer for after I remove a tick or just kill one.

Tecnu is good stuff. Prednisone isn’t something to take lightly. If you need it, you need it, but try not to need it.

There is an after exposure wipe out there, too - I’m not sure what’s in it. I have a few, but haven’t needed them, knock on wood. I just use hand sanitizer whenever I think I’ve touched it, and I’ve been good.

Actually my favorite remedy for avoiding poison oak was moving above the snow line, where poison oak does not grow in California. That said, as the snow line moved uphill, it will grow here some day soon too.
