my brother made fresh pineapple pina coladas last night.
but all I had was Cockspur brown rum.
they were delicious, but brown liquor in mixed drinks is kind of pointless.

have a white rum, unflavored or spiced etc, you really like other than Ron Rico or Bacardi. I'd say <$40 is the price point.

A few years back, I read that the original family who had been making Mount gay for 100+ years has sold the business. I don't know who bought it but, I would NOT be surprised if the original quality and taste have suffered.

I'm down to two bottles of Ron Mulata de Cuba. There is nothing like Cuban Rums for sipping. My mixing rum is Flor de Cana from Nicaragua.

Clear rum, ain't rum. For a Piña Colada it's gonna be tough to beat Mount Gay Eclipse. It's got a bit of color, a ton of rum flavor, and at ~$20/bottle it won't break the bank. For more rum forward cocktails, like Mai Tai's, or for drinks that benefit from a rum float, there are many more rummier (and yummier) options.... that do tip that color scale towards the deeper end.

You can get Flor de Cana at better liquor stores in Florida, you'll want the seven-year-old at least. They have a 25-year-old that is incredible but I have only seen it overseas. As for Ron Mulata, you can not get it in the states. I got it in Cuba. In other countries, you can often find Havana Club, which is the Cuban export rum (just don't confuse it with the Puerto Rican rum by the same name, it is glorified Bacardi).

A general rule that I have found holds true - the less you have heard of a Rum, the better it may be unless it is rotgut, but you won't know until you try it. But what fun to find out.

even harsh rum can be used for bananas foster, or home made caramel or caramel sauce.
