Giant scorpion in kitchen. How to proceed?

My mom found it in a dishrag. We’ve never seen one here. Google is crap. When you search for poison to kill scorpions, you get results for how poisonous scorpions are. Borax supposedly works, but slowly.

Catch and release if possible. It’s a fairly safe bet this creature has no personal animosity for your mother, it’s just living its life.

There may be a scorpion and spider spray at your local store.
I’ve seen it in TX and SC.

But seriously now, scorpions are carnivores, and need a consistent water source.

Chances are that there are not large numbers of others in the house.

Eliminate possible sources of food and water, and do a little hunting with a black or UV light.

Also, reduce habitat close to the house, i.e. firewood and lumber piles, leaves.

Having lived with them, I can answer you.

I hope that he was just the vanguard, but usually where there is one, you can be sure to find others. There are three things they need: food, water, and shelter. Get rid of their food source and they will leave. If there is no water, both they and their food source will leave. If there is no shelter, then, once again, they tend to leave.

You can’t really spray for them; they hold themselves up off the ground and thus step over anything you put down. Any spray they get is usually pretty minimal. Spraying does, however, tend to get rid of the food source (see above). You say it was found on the dish rag? The kitchen provides usually all the things they need. You could look at it as he’s your buddy, eating any pests he can find.

The fact that you found it shows me that (a) you may have pests and (b) it may be bad enough to bring in the predators. And they can get into spots that you would swear that was impossible, just like roaches. Just like mice. Are you sure that he didn’t get carried in? Have you seen any outside?

One house I lived in had them in the house as well as outside. It was situated on the edge of a large wooded area, intermixed with meadows (if you could call them that). They were “rare”, but there. Another place 20 miles away? Haven’t seen any. Spiders, yes. Scorpions, no.

Here in the US they are not much more poisonous than a bee or wasp. Stings are PAINFUL however. Wear shoes and make sure that things are shaken out before you put them on. Chances of one being in your shoes or clothes are small, but have I said the stings are painful? The one encounter I had in the house resulted in a pain-driven fury that only one of us survived.

The only way I know to be sure to get rid of them is to nuke. From orbit. Even then, I’m not sure you would get them all. Not everyone is willing to get that drastic, however.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Edit: and NO, I do not like them.

Corky* agrees with me.....

Natural Repellent: Lavender and cedar essential oils are said to be the best repellents. You can mix 20 drops of the essential oil of your choice, with water. Spray this mixture around window casings, doorframes and around foundation areas. Inside, spray around baseboards (may stain so test it first) and inside closets or anywhere else that could be used as a hiding place.

As does Wide Open Spaces....

How to Get Rid of Scorpions Naturally

Many types of scorpions hate certain smells of essential oil. Create a DIY sprayer with lavender, peppermint, and lemon essential oils. The base of the solution will be water. Spray small entryways such as windowsills and doorways.

.....and WikiHow

Purchase essential oils. Essential oils, while quite pleasant smelling to humans, have been proven very useful in repelling spiders and scorpions. The smells can be overwhelming to their sensitive senses and keep them from infiltrating the area.[1]

• Some of the most effective essential oils in combating spiders and scorpions include peppermint, tea tree, neem, and citrus.
• Some recommend lavender for use in repelling spiders and scorpions, but results are mixed. It’s probably best to focus your essential oil purchases on peppermint, citrus, neem, or tea tree.

The folks at Deep Drip also agree.

Pinterest is down w/ the oils...

VerminKill.com gives you perhaps the most detailed explanation of using essential oils on those pesky scorpions...

Dagnapit, y'all need to give "the oils" more love when it comes wrangling scorpions!

We have scorpions in the drier areas of Hawaii but centipedes are the real enemy. I use sticky traps ... under furniture and beds, behind doors, under sinks, anywhere I can think of where they are out of sight. Especially helpful near entrance doors. When encountered my weapon of choice is scissors. Gotta cut them up in pieces and then take the remains outside to the trash can.

Regarding scorpion stings not being dangerous:
I recall learning 25 years ago or so that, while true that stings are not dangerous in most of the U.S., a sting from some scorpions in Arizona can cause pancreatitis.

Things may have changed over the past 25 years - this subspecies may have spread or disappeared, but depending on where you live, this is worth keeping in mind.
