I like BASIC refrigerators. Example, the freezer on top variety. Plus, they seem to be the most energy efficient by a good deal, although all fridges are decently efficient these days.

I'm tempted to replace my basic 2-door with another, but I'm willing to look at others given the huge selection available now.

Our next one will be a French top (dual door) and freezer bottom. The increased access is the killer app for us.

I suspect that all fridges are reasonably good now (reliability aside, but thats also more of a problem at the higher end.)

I love, love, love the 2 drawer freezer on the bottom. Not a big fan of doors within doors or ice/water on the outside. Ice in the first freezer drawer and cold water inside the frig.

Like the inside of the frig configuration as well.

Do NOT buy a Samsung. Their designs are defective, their support is horrible. Ours has the classic "icemaker never works right" failure. And their technical 'recall' fix involves installing a new icemaker and motherboard that destroys the fridge and heats it to unsafe levels. So I'm not doing that.

I'm a fan of the sub $500 fridge.

My uncle is well-enough off they thought they would upgrade their old fridge, although there was nothing wrong with it. So they bought a new one with lots of features. They hate it.

As Cbelt3 said - stay away from Samsung.

We like our french door but get what works for you. If I had to buy today, I'd look for Whirlpool first, then Frigidaire.

I lean toward buying a $300 older model from a guy who refurbs them. There is not much that can go wrong with older ones and these guys know them backwards and forward. He’s going to go over everything before he puts it out for sale.

The manufacturers no longer care -- typically they all only have a one year warranty. Get it through Costco or use a card that will extend it.

Due to our narrow kitchen, we need the shallower counter depth, french door style.
Hard to fit around the door when open otherwise.

I will never buy anything kenmore again. The French door latch on our Kenmore fridge lasted about six months; the Kemore dishwasher has been flaky for years and just gave up altogether.

A decade+ ago when still had my "stick & brick" I bought a Maytag French Three Door model and LOVED it. My current RV has a Frigidaire French Three Door model too. The Maytag did NOT have water / ice on the door; the Frigidaire does. I prefer the extra space that the NO ice /water on the door provides. My Maytag had an icemaker in the bottom freezer. It worked great and over eight+ years, I NEVER had a problem with it. I can't imagine NOT sticking with the Three Door / Freezer on the bottom design if (when) I need to buy another fridge.

.....some like both tops....and bottoms....and can't decide....

It seems LG, GE Maytag and Whirlpool are tops when it comes to top-freezer models. I ruled out Samsung because of the issues I know several people have had with the brand when it comes to fridges.

However, if I were to buy a fridge, I'd absolutely go french door style. I much prefer it over any other style. the only nicety I'd want is water dispenser but only one that is inside the fridge. I'd not purchase one with a water/ice dispenser on the door. Those types are unreliable and take up what would otherwise be very useful space.

One thing to look at is less so much the reliability and more about the design of the interior and its flexibility. I like the interior design of the Frigidaire and have been able to arrange items inside it very well. The racks are built-well and are designed to contain minor spills and leaks. FWIW, I rarely raise and lower the racks. I moved them up and down a bit until I got them in as close as possible to an optimal position. I think I've moved one or two of them once or twice in ten years.

Our Fridgidaire does the job well. Am I a fan of the brand? No. Did it have the features and desig I wanted? Yes. Would I buy another Fridgidaire in the future? Maybe. I'd consider a Whirlpool or a GE Profile before Fridgedaire.

Whirlpool for reliability and ease of service and GE Profile because I had a GE Profile french door model in my old apartment that worked very well and is still performing well 13+ years later. My neighbor would've asked me about the fridge if there was any issues with it since I live right next door.

In contrast, I love the ice dispenser in the door. We fill pitchers as well as glasses and the dispenser will dispense cubes or shards, slivers and chunks. It also has a water dispenser which is a big fat fail because the water is warmer than the ambient temperature.

I for one, will not buy foreign badged large appliances like Bosch or Miele.
Think about what is gonna be easiest to repair. Call your local repair shop and see what they say.
A fridge looks simple, but when it has a bad day, it's a wake up.
Waiting for parts is no fun, especially these days. As appliances pass 7 yo, if they do, parts become a challenge and $$$.

I steer to Whirlpool and others they make under different names.
Whirlpool is also mostly US made.

I avoid anything GE as they are now run by Haier. Not that GE has been worth a damn in appliances for a long time. They make turbines, aeronautics and healthcare tech.
